"Imbecile" is a traditional medical term used to describe a person with moderate to severe mental retardation, as well as for a type of criminal. It arises from the Latin word imbecillus, meaning weak, or weak-minded. It would be no more an insult to explain that you are an imbecile than it would be for me to explain that you have diabetes.
