Amen Brother Creeser. The Poor Law and the Union workhouses were much like the modern socialist welfare state and were financed by compulsory taxes on income and capital. The only difference was that there were harsh conditions meant to discourage idleness and give incentive to find work – unlike under Obamunism where you can just sit back and produce welfare babies. Scrooge was correct – he was already paying his "fair share" in taxes to support them.

I'd like to see a sequel in which Scrooge and the other small business owners and investors in England all just pick up and move to a valley and ride trains, instead of creating jobs. Let the demon of Christmas Yet To Come chew on that future for a while.

Besides, Dickens totally ripped this story off from the equally horrible How The Grinch Stole Christmas, which was a thinly veiled allegory for the poor not having to pay their fair share of taxes.

Jesus tells us that we shouldn't waste our money on the poor.

John 12:8 "For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always."
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
