    Warshing Clothes Recipe

Years ago, an Alabama grandmother gave a new bride the following recipe exactly as written.

(Transcribed from old scrapbook with spelling errors intact.)

    WARSHING CLOTHES

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.

Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.

Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles — 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags.

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don’t boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

    Hang old rags on fence.

    Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed.
Scrub porch with hot soapy water.

    Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.

Brew cup of tea, sit, rock a spell, and count yore blessings.
Note: wrench water = rinse water.

I sincerely hope all of you ladies will keep these instructions in a safe place, as they may come in handy should your husband ever decide he's got better things to spend money on than replacing a busted washing machine.

    Re: Warshing Clothes Recipe

When my wife, Mrs, Hutchins, was still young and fetching, I splurged and bought her a machine. I found her sitting on it one day screaming because of the demons within. I got rid of it the next day.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
