Police: Teen Chokes Grandmother, Shoots Bible

Grandson Faces Multiple Charges

UNION, S.C. -- Union police said that a man is facing several charges after he choked his grandmother, threatened his cousin with a rifle, and shot a Bible.

Police said on Wednesday, Mary Phillips woke up her 19-year-old grandson, James Phillips, to ask him if he knew where her debit card was. He told her he didn't know where the card was, and at that point her other grandson, 17-year-old Chad Phillips, came up behind her and began to choke her.

James Phillips said when he shouted at his cousin, Chad stopped choking his grandmother and lunged at him.

Mary Phillips left the home to go to a doctor. After she left, Chad got a rifle and threatened to kill him, his grandmother and himself, James said. He said Chad then fired the rifle toward a house across the street, and then fired it at a Bible that was lying on the floor.

James, who was wearing only his underwear, said he tackled his cousin, and they both fell out the front door. He said he grabbed the rifle, and ran into some nearby woods where he tossed the weapon.

A short time later, deputies stopped a car that they believed to be driven by Chad Phillips. They said that he ran and hid under a house, and was later found and taken into custody.

Police said that they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the house that Mary Phillips said belong to Chad. Officers also recovered the rifle.

Chad Phillips is charged with kidnapping, discharging a firearm in a dwelling, pointing and presenting a firearm and assault of a high and aggravated nature.

Initial reports are that it indeed was a KJV1611 Authorized Version Holy Bible.

I'd like to announce that Landover Baptist is sending grief counselors to offer prayers and spiritual support to the police officers who were traumatized by having to recover the desecrated Bible. The Holy Book in question will be brought back to Freehold and put on display in the goth scum wing of the Freehold Crime and Oddities Museum.

When someone is found guilty of interfering with safety equipment, the penalties are quite severe.
Surely a law is in existence that instructs us what to do with someone that attempts to destroy Gods message for mankind?

First point of consideration, any Christain "traumatized" by the sight of a desercrated Bible needs to be stronger in their faith. We are all soldiers in an Army of righteousness, and to be weak in the face of the depredations of the enemy is to be weak in your faith.

As far as the Bible being more than a book, my scripture's a little weak on this one. I agree the Word of God is a sacred and indisputable thing, but to consider a glue bound collection of papers as something more than a tool with which we reach the Word, that seems like fetishism more than Christianity. If you have relevant scriptual citation to refute this, I request it.

I can not speak for the good Pastor, but I will not sit by and let people destroy a Bible. It is more than a book written by some joe-blow off the street. Maybe the one who needs to have stronger faith is the one who would not be bothered by it?

How can you say it is sacred and Holy but also say that it does not bother you to see one destroyed?

I would consider myself bothered by this event for sure, but I do not give the deed the power that others would. By railing, and wringing ones hands, one validates to the harmful nature of the acts of our enemies.

Though they can tear a page, they cannot stop it's message, though fire and blades can destroy a Bible, the Word goes on.

As far as being any book written by Joe Blow off the street, the tradition of the history of the Bible means nothing, the people who wrote it mean nothing, and whether it's read in the mud or on a golden table, only the truth of the relevations of God to mankind make the Bible worth anything more than the paper it's printed on. God gave us Jesus Christ born to commoners in a stable, the King of all Kings in manger.

As far as standing by while someone does it, consider the example of Jesus Christ in John 18:10-11
