A Department of Homeland Security report warning of possible radicalization of right-wing extremists rubs US conservatives the wrong way. The report released last week by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Intelligence and Analysis suggested that concerns over illegal immigration, abortion, increasing federal power and restrictions on firearms could lead to acts of violence.
Although the finding falls short of providing any specific information that domestic right-wing terrorists are planning acts of violence, it singles out that returning war veterans are likely to be recruited by US terror groups.
The government considers you a terrorist threat if you oppose abortion, own a gun or are a returning war veteran, complained House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-TX), who accused the DHS of “political profiling” and “using people’s political views to assess an individual’s susceptibility to terror recruitment.”
“That’s like saying if you love puppies you might be susceptible to recruitment by the Animal Liberation Front,” said Smith, calling it “ridiculous and deeply offensive to millions of Americans.”
Veterans’ groups have also denounced the DHS report for saying disgruntled vets are considered susceptible to recruitment by groups looking for “combat skills and experience.”
