Prison guards disciplined for part in illegal gay wedding ceremony for lesbean inmates
LOWELL, Florida - On St. Patrick's Day, corrections officers allowed two female inmates at Lowell Correctional Facility to be joined in a wedding ceremony, prison officials said today. Eight officers were disciplined in the incident. Six were suspended, one resigned and another was fired.
According to an investigation report, the room was decorated with state paper towels and makeshift pink bows made from inmate request forms. Figures of two women sat atop a wedding cake surrounded by cards and endearments. Wearing a veil clipped to her hair and holding a bouquet of flowers, one of the women was escorted down a set of stairs to the ceremony while another inmate sang. An inmate officiated the ceremony which was described as "very elaborate." The couple was allowed to kiss.
"This was an unauthorized activity in close management area, the most restricted area for inmates," the prison said in a statement. "Staff observed and did not intervene. It is highly inappropriate to correctional setting because it implies sexual relations, which are illegal in prison. It was a failure to maintain security because an officer risked her safety and other staff by allowing inmates to gather and not taking appropriate action to contact shift supervisor or keep inmates secure when staff reported to her than inmates said they were going to have wedding."
Chaplain Alex Taylor said no same-sex marriages are allowed because it is illegal in the state of Florida. Taylor receives about 500 requests each year and a little more than half result in a marriage.
The couple was split up by sending one to another institution.
