Technically, Mr. (or Miss, if you prefer) John is entitled to his opinions about Christ. With the exception of the addition of gay I see nothing wrong with his statement. That being said, I believe that this could be a play on words on part of the media. It could have been that Mr. (or Miss) John could have meant gay in the notion of "happy", equally he could have meant it as homosexual. I would encourage you all to refrain from judgment until we can actually read the article which this article is referring to.

There are no "opinions" of Jesus Christ. One can read His Word and either accept Him or deny Him. There is nothing subjective about the Holy Bible.

Do you really believe that a fudgepacking homer like Elton John would use the word "gay" when he meant "happy"?

Here's the quote from the original article in Parade:
