A long-simmering financial feud between Heath Ledger's father and uncles can't seem to rest in peace.

Mike and Haydn Ledger have voiced concerns about their brother, and Heath's father, Kim, suggesting he might mishandle his son's sizable estate. The brothers point to Kim's supposed mismanagement of their grandfather's finances and say they want to ward off repeat behavior with regard to the Oscar-nominated actor's holdings.

The brothers Ledger, who have been estranged from Kim for 15 years and who were persona non grata at Heath's hometown memorial, first aired their dirty laundry over the weekend in Australia's Sunday Times, saying they chose to speak out about their family feud now, rather than earlier, so as not to bring undue attention on their late nephew's life.

"Once Heath got up and going, we were just so proud of him, and we didn't want to do anything to muddy his career," Haydn Ledger told the newspaper. "We had enormous respect for him. If these events hadn't happened, we would never have said anything publicly about Kim."

The brothers also claim they only proffered their opinion on Kim's financial management skills—or lack thereof—out of concern for Heath's daughter, Matilda, and after being asked by Michelle Williams' father, Larry.

"It's been portrayed as sour grapes, but this has only come about by two brothers offering their opinion when it was asked for by Larry Williams," Haydn Ledger told the Times, adding in The Australian, "Larry made contact with Mike and I and just asked, 'Is Kim the kind of guy capable of handling this estate?' and we told him, given the history, we think not."

Kim's handling of the estate of his grandfather, the noted Australian engineer Sir Frank Ledger, ended in contentious litigation that ultimately divided the Ledger family. Kim took control of the multimillion-dollar estate in 1986. Soon after, Mike Ledger told People, "it plunged into enormous debt," and the brothers publicly blamed Kim for denying them $2.5 million to which they claimed they were entitled. A Supreme Court judge subsequently, and at the behest of a group of extended Ledger family members, removed Kim as executor of the estate.

As for Heath's will, drafted prior to his coupling with Williams and the birth of their daughter, it leaves everything to his parents and sister, though his father was quick to publicly state that Williams and Matilda will be "taken care of" and equally as quick to decry his estranged brothers' concerns.

"It is sad at this extremely difficult time in our lives, while we are grieving the loss of our beloved son, that estranged family members publicly discuss matters they have not been privy to in the past or now," Kim said last week.

Mike and Haydn Ledger, meanwhile, took pains to point out in the various publications in which they aired their familial grievances that they were not seeking any cut of the star's will themselves, telling the Times that "the money is not an issue and it never has been."

"We're not hunting for anything. That belongs to Matilda."

If reports in Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper are right, Heath Ledger’s 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, will not be as well “taken care of” in the wake of her father’s death as Ledger’s family promised. According to papers filed Feb. 29 in New York by lawyers for the Ledger family, the Oscar-nominated star was worth only $145,000 at the time of his Jan. 22 death from an accidental prescription drug overdose.

The papers state that the total value of Heath’s estate is “$145,000, with furniture and fixtures worth $20,000, a http://www.bostonherald.com/track/st...osition=6worth $25,000 and $100,000 in miscellaneous bank accounts.”


You may remember that the “Brokeback Mountain” star’s father, Kim Ledger, assured press his granddaughter would be “taken care of” after it was revealed Ledger’s will had not been updated since the birth of his daughter with actress Michelle Williams.

The 2003 document named only Ledger’s father, mother and sister as his beneficiaries. And, according to the Telegraph, these papers acknowledge Matilda only as an interested party. The Australian co-executors nominated by Heath’s will are Mark Dyson and Rob Collins, a Perth accountant who has been a close financial adviser of Kim Ledger’s for many years.

However, scrutiny of Kim’s ability to manage his son’s will was sparked this month by a public warning from Kim’s estranged brothers. Kim’s brothers questioned his ability to handle the financial affairs after his mismanagment in the ’80s of the $2 million estate of their late grandfather Sir Frank Ledger. Kim’s brother said Kim borrowed heavily against Sir Frank Ledger’s assets, leaving the estate in debt by the time the WA Supreme Court removed him as administrator of Sir Frank’s will in 1994.

Heath’s father failed to return repeated attempts for comment by the Telegraph.

Ledger honoured in home country

The late Australian actor Heath Ledger has been posthumously honoured with one of his country's top film awards.

Ledger was granted the Australian Film Institute's (AFI) international award for best actor for playing The Joker in the Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Guests at the awards ceremony in Melbourne's Princess Theatre gave Ledger a standing ovation. The 28-year-old actor died in January of an accidental overdose of painkillers and other medicines.

His sister Kate accepted the award, accompanied by her parents. "It has been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member," she said. "We are so proud of him and humbly accept this award on behalf of his beautiful daughter [Matilda], who we will cherish forever."

The AFI, celebrating its 50th annual award ceremony, paid tribute to Ledger, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain in 2005. "He was the untamed spirit many of us wish we could be. May the legend live on," said an AFI tribute.

I made some calls, and this is what happened:

Mr. Ledger's family lied and announced he'd received a nomination, and homosexual-ruled Hollywood caved and released the nominations early this year, to show "support".

It's shameful that this sort of guerrilla warfare is allowed to go on. And what of the actor "bumped" from the list...to make room for Mr. Ledger? We won't know who it was until a lawsuit ensues.
