RIYADH (CBT) - Two Saudi women convicted of posting on an Internet website for women were beheaded by the sword on Friday, the interior ministry said.
Bahiya Al-Oteibi and Brunei Al-Hamadwas found guilty of blasphemous complaints against men on the All About Male Privilege Tumblr, it said in a statement carried by the SPA state news agency, adding that they committed the act after drinking alcohol, banned in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom. The identities of the male victims of these complaints were not disclosed.
These beheadings in the western city of Mecca brings to 53 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year, according to a CBT tally based on official reports. Rights group Amnesty International puts the number of people executed in the Gulf country last year at 79.
In addition to blasphemy, the death penalty is handed down in Saudi Arabia for a wide range of offences including murder, rape, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking, as stipulated by Islamic syariah law.
The operators of the All About Male Privilege Tumblr were not immediately available to apologize.
