Obama selects openly gay federal judge in Oregon
A county judge in Oregon was nominated to the US District Court by President Obama last week. Judge Michael McShane is the first openly gay federal judge in Oregon.
McShane’s position will solidify if Obama wins a second presidential term in November. After which the Senate confirms his nomination.
McShane previously served as a public defender in Portland and as a pro tempore judge. Most recently, McShane held his position as a judge in Multnomah county for 11 years, processing an estimated 100 cases a month.
Both of Oregon’s senators, Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, approved of McShane’s nomination.
“Michael has a long track record that demonstrates his commitment to equal justice under the law. Widely known for his service to the community, he has made Oregon a better place,” said Senator Wyden in a statement last week.
