Fireside Chat With the Mayor: Spring and Post Moderism

It is wonderful to contemplate the coming of Spring in Freehold. It's a time when we can finally leave the Iowa snow and cold behind. We can enjoy God's gift of green.

Speaking of green, I'd like to share a thought I've had about our devotion to the Christian life and our yard care in Freehold. It has to do with both how our City looks to people who visit, and, to the theological statement we make with the appearance of our properties.

In my view, the most Godly period in recent American history was the 1950's, the period we associate with the term "moderism". It was when a City like Freehold was uniform.

In fact, I've seen some old photos, of course they are in black and white, of our neigborhoods back then. Everything was uniform. Houses looked the same as did the lawns, streets and boulevards. It projects the image of a City where people both looked alike and thought alike in their devotion to the Christian life.

While I'm not a theologian, it seems to me that this thing called "postmodernisn" is a tool of Satan. It's a mindset where everyone can think and do whatever they want. We know from our study of the Bible that this is not an option for the heaven bound.

So, here's a suggestion for our lawns. Now, this is not an ordinance, just a suggestion. Let's try to make our community reflect the Godliness of uniformity, of moderism. Let's not clutter up the look of our homes and neigborhood with flowers, bushes and gardens. Let there be a carpet of only green grass as far as the eye can see.

That way, others will know we are not a community of have-it-your-way Christians.

    Have a wonderful Spring.

Good idea. In Cedar Rapids all the residents on my street have made a choice to blacktop over all the grass in our yards. People kept mowing in the wrong direction. Each Monday of the new week you are to change direction in your mowing patterns. Front to back, then the next week right to left, the next week diagonal right, then diagonal left. Much easier with blacktop.
