Freehold Will Not Participate in Slandering Joseph Kony

A misinformed and unreliable group is planning a nationwide slander of Ugandan leader, Joe Kony, on April 20. I'm instructing residents of Freehold to not participate.

On April 20, this group wants everyone to watch a propaganda film againt Mr. Kony called, Kony 1012. This film, apparently, claims there were children forcefully taken into Mr. Kony's army and never returned to their parents.

We should get a few things straight, here. Because some children are missing, it does not automatically mean they have been abducted. It just means they are not where they are supposed to be.

That there are doctored photos of adult professional soldiers made to look like children does not mean there were abductions.

While there will be Mayors who look the other way as this slander continues, this Mayor will not. Freehold will not show Kony 2012 on April 20.

Is Kony committing genocide? Is he setting about the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group? Let's work through the criteria and see what we find:

National: Mr. Kony started his work in Uganda, and has since operated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Sudan, and South Sudan. That means his operations are TRANS-national, so this criterion does not apply.

Racial: Mr. Kony is black, as are almost all of the people in the area. Unless he's planning on committing suicide (which as a good Christian he would consider to be sinful, and thus not an option), this does not apply.

Political: He does not appear to be motivated against any single group, just against anyone who is against him, so this does not apply.

Cultural: See "Political" above. Does not apply for the same reasons.

So, no. Joseph Kony may be accused of many things, but to accuse him of genocide is incorrect, by definition. You may continue to do so, but realize that in re-defining words to make ourselves feel better (and to hell with the proper meanings of words), language loses it's power and we may as well all be grunting apes in a tree.

The lesson for you in all this: if you're going to throw accusations around, make them accurate, or you look like a fool.

And, what proof is there that Kony is responsible when children don't seem to be where they are supposed to be. Every kid who doesn't come straight home from school is a "victum'?

Children dying and genocide--these are part of the healing process God put here on earth. I'm always surprised when people think otherwise.

The best thing folks can do is READ THE BIBLE and not start making up their own rules on how things should be.

Our friend, Joe Korny, knows what has to be done and all Christians should support him.
