  • Travel Bargains in New Guinea?

A quick vacation is in order.

I am thinking of something challenging and exotic. In fact, Papua, New Guinea sounds like my cup of tea. I am not one to shy away from anything! If anyone can recommend places to go there, particularly where to go at night to enjoy the local scene and then spread the truths of Judaism during the day, it would be wonderful.

I haven't done much study on Papua but I do hear there are dangers. I have complete trust in the G_d of Israel, so I don't think I need to read up on it much. Again, your recommendations and thoughts on this trip will be gratefully appreciated!

    Hiya Mike,

I would suggest you travel to the highlands. The tribes people are extremely friendly and love meeting new people and having them for over for dinner. By far the most friendly are the Korowai who are extremely fond of having visitors. Also in general it is a very safe country so you won't have to worry too much about your safety.

Hope you have a great time and enjoy the local hotpot.

It might be helpful to start by distinguishing Papua, which is a province of Indonesia, from Papua New Guinea, which isn't.

You should be able to learn the local language, Tok Pissin', in about a day. It's rather verbose, so you should be right at home with it. Here's a helpful example:

An opportunity for some "multicultural" exchange there Brother Taylor - it's likely that the Korowai tribe has never tasted a Jewish meal, and is not familiar with Kosher preparation.

The subject of this post states "New Guinea." My initial post mentions Papua, New Guinea. That would seem to indicate I have specified Papua, New Guinea.

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions. I booked a ticket and made reservations! I just can't wait to leave. I arrive at the airport fairly late in Papua but I'm told there is easy access to a taxi to my rather out of the way hotel. I think I'll take a walk after I get my bags to the hotel and check out the night life. Then I'll take the suggestion about the highlands.

I'll check in to let you know how things are going! I plan to be there at least a week so if anyone else has suggestions I'm all ears!

              Brother William,
I have heard that their preparation methods are rather similar to halal preparations, which would mean that it is basically the same as kosher, only with pork.

                Mikey,
Really glad to hear you're going. Hope you have a great time and don't get chewed out by some wild animal. I hear a bracing walk after dark is all the rage so you'll probably enjoy that.

Ah, right. I must have mistaken the comma for a speck of dust on the screen. So you're going to the Indonesian part of New Guinea then, not the country called Papua New Guinea (without a comma). Have fun!

                    Mr Hezekiah,

Is it permitted for those of your cult to wear the traditional costume of the Papuans?

I mean, is it by your criteria a violation of those parts of the Holy Bible that you also subscribe to?

                    Genesis 17:10
This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

Aren't you at the risk of undoing this commandment if you cover up the anatomical region in question? The verse in question in Tok Pisin (the vernacular that you need to learn) is as follows:

God i mekim kamap olgeta samting 17:10
Na e yupela i mas bihainim dispela mak bilong kontrak bilong mi. Yupela i mas katim skin bilong kok bilong olgeta man long lain bilong yupela.

                    Yours in Christ,

                    Elmer
2 Kings 18:25 - Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

I am really touched by everyone's outpouring of suggestions and encouragement! I expected someone to say "No, don't go there - it's full of heathens and sin and you'll wander into somewhere you shouldn't with possible negative consequences!" But no...

You've all encouraged me to go. In fact, while I won't say the person's name here, I received an encouraging PM URGING me to go and informing me that I should look to find the official welcome organization called the Raskols and tell them (not ask, but tell - as is the tradition, I'm told) to take me everywhere - NOW - or else! This is how people see the really hidden areas others don't get to see.

Maybe I've misjudged you people a bit. If so, I apologize!

                      Your friend,
                      Mike H.

                        Mike,
No need to apologize. We have always been here to help and guide you, even though you ignored all the help and advice, it made us happy knowing that we were doing the Lord's Great Work.

Anyway, I have spoken with an acquaintance, who happens to be a member of the Bomai Welcoming Committee, and he has said that all you have to do is meet up with him and he will show you the time of your life. His name is Kovai and he lives in the up-market suburb of Four Mile in Moresby. If you like I will pass on all your details and he will make contact when you arrive.

Hoping you have a cultural experience you never forget.
