OBION COUNTY, Tenn. - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight.

A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck.

This fire went on for hours because garden hoses just wouldn't put it out. It wasn't until that fire spread to a neighbor's property, that anyone would respond.

Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee.

"I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong," said Gene Cranick.

Ben Franklin started this practice in 17--'s Philadelphia. Problem with his system was there were several fire companies overlapping different parts of the city so if you lived on the border you were better off to pay each company the yearly fee. If you paid company East and company West answered the alarm your house burned.

Deadbeats like Gene need to learn a lesson. Fee-for-service means you have to PAY THE FEE to GET THE SERVICE.

Maybe he should have installed some smoke detectors with his $75; could have figured out the house was on fire while he could still put it out himself.

The problem was only there because Franklin was a long haired hippie so he was looking for a handout. The Roman's had it right with Crassus. The Roman's knew that government was the problem, not the solution to fighting fires so they let the invisible hand of the market put them out. Public minded Crassus formed his own team of free market PRODUCER firefighters. When a fire happened Crassus would show up with his firemen, buy the property on fire and then put it out. That way Roman property owners were spared the odious burden of taxes for a Statist LOOTER run fire department.

Exactly, government isn't the solution, Jesus is! While those luzers watched their house burned while the firemen sat there drinking beers they got to see how useless public services is. Real Christians would have gone in and fought the fire, money or not. But piece of trash government has to have their money to keep the slackers happy.

Today Glenn Beck and co-hose Pat Gray gave their own take on Gene Cranick, the Tennessee man whose house burned down while county firefighters watched. The fire department of Republican-controlled Obion County refused to help Cranick because he had not paid a $75 subscription fee. As a result, Cranick's house was destroyed and he lost his two dogs and cat.

Not surprisingly, Beck and Gray argued that the county and the fire department did the right thing by not turning their hoses on Cranick's house. Beck argues that since Cranick did not pay his $75 subscription fee he does not deserve the fire protection. Going further, Beck and his co-host actually mock Cranick and his southern accent through much of the segment (audio to the left). Both men portray Cranick as some kind of southern redneck who does not understand how the Tea Party, free market principles are suppose to work.
