Conservative patriotism vs Liberal "patriotism"
This INDEPENDENCE DAY (Only people who hate America call it the 4th of July) after attending a tea party, I was shocked to discover a liberal had come out to watch the fireworks. I was under the impression that liberals spent the day with their doors locked, hiding under the bed and murmering to themselves as they wait for God's Favorite Holyday to pass. It was startling to discover that some liberals actually consider themselves "patriotic".
Friends, there are two very different definitions of "patriotism". There is conservative patriotism and liberal "patriotism". This article is here to explain the difference.
I asked the liberal "What is it about America that you love?"
He said "I love the constitution, I love our melting-pot culture, I love our separation of Church and State, I love our pragmatic ability to adapt as times change, I love the egalitalitarian "American dream" - "
I interupted: "So you're saying that if America hadn't written the constitution, if we were an intolerate, hidebound culture, and if we had aristocrats, you would not love America?"
"Well, that's a moot point"
"Well, let's put it this way: If America burned the constitution and denied it had ever been written, and if we expelled all non Anglo-Saxon protestants, and if we called him "Sir George Bush", you would openly hate America?"
"America would still have a proud history, even if it's denied-"
"Okay, say you were not born in America. Say you were born in Afganistian, where they has never been any founding fathers or cultural tolerance, egalitarianism and so on. Would you be a patriot?"
"I would love America all the more"
"But you wouldn't love YOUR COUNTRY which in this case would be Afganistan?"
"Of course."
So there you have it - "my country right or wrong" means nothing to liberals. They are sunshine patriots - the moment their country isn't "worthy" - for whatever reason - their love of country evaporates.
A conservative says "country first". A liberal says "democracy and freedom and then, if it happens to provide the above, my country."
So I said:
"Love of country, faith and family is bred into my bones. I can proudly state that if I was born an Iranian Muslim I would love Iran with all my heart, love Allah with all my soul, and hate the enemy (in this case America) with every drop of bile in my body. I would be first to volunteer to fight the "great Satan" because fierce patriotism and loyalty to the flag comes before any academic babble about separation of powers or meritocracy. What if YOUR liberal behind was born an Iranian Muslim?"
"I would oppose the regime and its religion. I would resist in any way I could"
"So you admit that every liberal is a potential traitor and heretic, who are held back from open treason simply because of ther circumstances. The only difference between a liberal patriot and a liberal traitor is where and when he happens to be born - in short, dumb luck."
Liberals love America because of the constitution, the founding fathers, apple pie and all the rest of those circumstances. Conservatives only happen to love the constitution, the founding fathers, and apple pie, because they happen to be American.
This is why I supported Reagan when he gave nerve gas to Saddam Hussien during the 1980's. He was our ally, and "my country right or wrong" also means "my allies, right or wrong". Then Bush Sr, declared Saddam the enemy, and so Saddam became the enemy. "My country right or wrong" also means "my enemy right or wrong".
Treason is not an option for a patriot. Heresy is not an option for a God-fearing man. If America invaded Canada, and Pat Roberson said that we should sacrifice Canadian kids on altars, the liberals would desert, commit treason, become heretics.
Liberals hate our enemies, the Taliban, because of burkas and kite-banning. I hate burkas and kite-banning because our enemies do it. If America turned into an Islamist dicatorship and Afganistan into a shining beacon of freedom and democracy, who would salute the Red, White and Blue? Who would sing the Star Spangled banner?
Not the liberals, the sunshine patriots. Only conservatives would stand by the flag and the faith.
