Luke 1-3
Luke 1.
1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
Luke, the third time we get to read the same thing (BUT wait, if you order now we'll throw in a 4th version of the exact same thing!)
Luke is actually Luke-Acts, why they separated the two is unknown, but they hadda put John in somewhere. Luke covers the exact same things. It was probably written around 90-110 AD, so only 60-80 years after the events took place. The source material for Luke comes from three main places, Mark, a thing called Q and some stuff called "the L source". The L source has stuff only in Luke. No one knows who really wrote Luke, so we'll just call the author... Luke. Some folks believe Luke was a companion of the apostle Paul (Paul, the guy who had a vision, but never physically met Jesus before then).
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
Zach and Liz couldn't get pregnant. Zach was doing his work at the temple, and an angel said his wife would get pregnant. To prove it, the angel shut him up.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
So, people are like, "why can't Zach talk? it's a miracle!"
After a couple of months the same angel Gabriel, goes to Mary (who just happens to be Liz's cousin) and says, hey, you gonna be preggo too!
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
Really old Elizabeth, and virgin Mary, both pregnant, what kind of family is Jesus and John being born into?
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
Try that the next time you see your pregnant teenage cousin.
Mary stayed with Liz for a while. Liz had a baby, everyone is like "call him Zach".
60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
The name was probably Yohanah, which means "graced by jehovah". So that's kind of an impressive name to give someone. It got anglicized to John. I'm glad it's the KJV1611 in English and that we don't all speak German now, otherwise, we'd be talking about Johan the Baptist!
Then Zach could talk.
Luke 2
There's the tax again, Mary and Joe go to Bethlehem. Then Mary pops.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Remember, it's not that they couldn't afford the inn, it's just that it was full.
Angels then tell shepherds. The shepherds go see.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord; )
I've often wondered why Mary had to do purification? (Leviticus 12)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
Is giving birth sinful? Why would Mary have to do a sin offering (and a burnt offering) for giving birth to the Saviour? Was Mary (like everyone else at the time) just going through the motions?
Two people in/around the temple then can die because Jesus finally showed up. Simeon and Anna.
12 years later!!!
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
Mary and Joe leave and they think Jesus is with some family, instead he stayed behind.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
Interestingly... Jesus was probably the same age as Mary when she got pregnant.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
Mary and joe were like, "you are selling cabinets?"
Luke 3
John begins his work.
7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
They are cousins, I guess it's ok that Jesus and John both like to call everyone a "generation of vipers".
The people are like "is John the christ?"
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
Then Jesus gets baptized.
22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Next we get some begats.
23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
I like the "as was supposed" part. Because he wasn't the son of Joseph.
31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,
32 Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,
Here's the important part. Jesus can trace his family back to David.
Booz, is Boaz, the guy who married Ruth, because her husband Mahlon died, and he was supposed to marry her and they have a kid who is going to be Mahlon's son. But that didn't happen. Ruth was a Moab. David was the great grandson of a Moab. Moab's aren't supposed to be allowed in to the 10th generation, which would be some other guy named Joseph (son of Jonan).
So, what have we learned today? (almost nothing new, but...)
1. John the baptist was Jesus cousin.
2. Mary offered a sin offering, even though she didn't really sin.
3. There's a lot of artwork of "the finding in the temple". In each (most) of them, Jesus is shown as a very young boy (of 12ish). It's odd that Mary was roughly that age when she got pregnant. As a boy of 12, it's expected that he's young and innocent, as a girl, she was fully capable of of being a mother.
