Isaiah 28-30
Isaiah 28
1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
Isaiah is picking on the Northern Kingdom, again calling them by Ephraim, the largest tribe of the north. Apparently, the north had a drinking problem, or their behavior was stupid enough to be compared to a drunk.
3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:
Odd, how in chapter 25, the people surviving would be drinking the finest wine, wine on lees, (Muscadet, for example) and today, the people are condemned for their drinking.
4 And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
Fat doesn't mean obese, it means the best. Remember, Abel brought the fat firstlings of his flock, it wasn't the plumpers, it was the good ones. Isaiah was pissed at these people, who had some of the best land, well, not Isaiah, but God was pissed.
7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
Maybe they were drunks.
8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
Isaiah must have gone to a party in the north, and everyone got drunk, but he was the prude sitting over in the corner, complaining because none of the hot chicks hit on him. Everyone else hooked up with someone, but he was there by himself, sulking in the corner. I'd think it's amazing the prophecy you can come up with for people you dislike.
12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
Isaiah said that God is offering the north a way out, but they are not willing to listen.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
I'm not sure if this deals with the Isaiah 22:13 eat and drink for tomorrow we die, or not. I think this deals with the north's treaty with Syria, in opposition to the Assyrians (Babylon).
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Remember, the south wasn't a part of that treaty, so Assyria didn't take them away.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
That overflowing scourge was the Assyrians. Wave upon wave of them, wiping the people of the north off the map, taking them back as captives.
23 Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
Isaiah promises that if they do break their agreement with death (Syria) they have a chance, well, not a chance, they will win.
The rest of this chapter compares God's work to that of a farmer.
25 When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?
Fitches is the spice kalonji (black cumin). Cummin is also a spice. Wheat is used for bread. Rie (rye) is also used as a bread grain. Barley, well, that's used in breads, stews, soups, and animal feed... it's also a prime ingredient in beer. Actually, this looks like a recipe for beer. Black cumin, cumin, wheat, rye, barley... that's a gruit.
26 For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.
God the farmer (brewer) puts all the plants in the right places, he doesn't just grab a handful of seeds, throw them into the field and hope tomacco grows.
29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
God plants everything where it needs to go, and then he harvests it when it's ready. Unlike before, in Isaiah 5, when God couldn't control a vineyard, now he's an expert farmer.
Isaiah 29
1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.
Ariel is one of the names for Jerusalem. It basically means "Lion of God". Ariel is not the little mermaid.
3 And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
During Hezekiah's reign, Sennacherib of Assyria laid siege to Jerusalem.
5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
First, the enemies will be out there to destroy, then, they will suddenly be broken up like dust.
7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
It won't be like a wet dream.
8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
The enemies will dream of food, and drink. The food and drink they dream of is Jerusalem, but they'll just wake up sticky, and have to run their sheets to the laundry before their mom comes in the room to make the bed.
9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
Now, God's talking to Jerusalem again.
God will cause the prophets to cease, he'll make the rulers dumb. He'll make books that are locked.
12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
He'll cause mass illiteracy.
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
He'll do this because people will say one thing, and feel another. Like an old married couple that is having problems, but she just drops her pearl-black eyes and prays to hear him say i love you; but he tells no more lies. It's better to not lie to God, than to tell him untrue flattery.
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
God made the people, he knows that they don't mean what they say.
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
When the messiah comes (again) the book will be opened and people will be able to read it.
20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
The bad people will be destroyed.
24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
All the people who were wrong, will be right; everyone will know the right way.
Isaiah 30
1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
Hiding sin, is a sin.
2 That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
Hezekiah entered into an alliance with Egypt, which caused Sennacherib to attack Judah.
3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
They lost.
6 The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.
Fiery flying serpent?
7 For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.
God wanted the people to trust in him, and not have human alliances with other nations.
9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:
God was really angry.
10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
That, sums up modern christianity. SPEAK UNTO US SMOOTH THINGS. Turn on the tv on a sunday morning and watch some of the local preachers. Turn on the radio on a sunday morning and listen to some of the local preachers. Turn the radio to a christian station; turn the TV to TBN. How much smooth things do you hear? How often do you hear of fire and brimstone? How often will you hear that God will forgive your sins? Compare that to how often you are asked to quit sinning and do the right thing. People don't want to hear the true word of God. People want to hear that "God is love". People want to hear that everyone goes to heaven. People drop their wallets, women drop their panties for some feel good preaching. People choose a church based on if the church matches up with their morals. Does the church condemn homosexuality? Does the church condemn premarital sex? Does the church condemn things of this world? NO, most churches gloss over the parts that make people uncomfortable. David slaying Goliath is such a cute story; it shows the power of the LORD. Kids are taught it at an early age. They don't mention that after David slew Goliath he drew Goliath's sword and cut off his head and held it up as a prize. The story of Lot is a great story of God's wrath against sinful people. As a child I was never taught that Lot's daughters then seduced him. Modern christianity only preaches the cute parts. Did you find a church that teaches only the nice stuff that suits you? Or did you find a church that teaches the Bible, the kind that suits God?
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
Because the people were happy in their sin, God will break down their wall. Not slowly... it will break down like a levy in New Orleans, and drown black people.
15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
If the people would put their trust in God, he would protect them. But they won't.
16 But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
You may try to run away, but the wrath of God is faster.
18 And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
Eventually, you will figure things out. God's gonna kick your ass for a while, then when you realize why you are getting your ass kicked, He'll let you back into his good graces.
21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
God is going to be behind you, telling you the way out. But first, he's probably going to kill about 90%. Hopefully you are in the living 10%.
22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

23 Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Of course the pastures will be large, 90% of the other farmers will be killed by God's wrath. If you survived, you'll have 9 times more land than before.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:
But first, remember, he's gonna kick your ass.
31 For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.
That voice of the LORD will come from Persia. Cyrus, was the person who truly conquered the world (except for Egypt) his name means Son of Truth, or Son of the Sun.
32 And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.
When Cyrus took over Israel, he then had Ezra lead the people back.
So what have we learned today?
1. Did you pick a religion that fits you; or did you pick a religion that fits God?
2. Ephraim had a drinking problem.
3. Before the messiah comes (again), there will be mass illiteracy.
