2 Chronicles 1-3
We now start on 2 Chronicles; which starts out as a history of Solomon; and then becomes a history of the kings of Judah. Remember, Chronicles was most likely written by Ezra (a Levite) so it's got a major Levite stance. Why? The temple was in Jerusalem (in Judah) so where would the top Levites be? In Jerusalem with the temple.
Today we get:
2 Chronicles 1
1 And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.
Remember, the LORD left Saul, and then Saul had all kinds of problems. Then the LORD hovered on David, so David prospered. So now that the LORD is hanging with Solomon, He got really good at blessing. Practice makes perfect, and even the LORD seems to be getting perfect-er.
Solomon then went to the tentbernacle, which was set up at Gibeon, but the ark was in Jerusalem; in David's temporary tent.
So Solomon went to the brass altar that was still in Gibeon (why the Philistines who stole the ark didn't take the altar is a mystery) and sacrificed lots.
7 In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
So Solomon flatters the LORD for a bit (as flattery will get you everywhere with our diety), then asks for wisdom.
10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
Remember, in 1 Kings 3, Solomon asked for wisdom because he claimed to be a little child. He was 29 at the time. What did David do to Solomon to make him think he was just a child at age 29?
God said that because Solomon didn't ask for riches, that He'd give that to him anyway.
12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
Knowledge is power!
13 Then Solomon came from his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned over Israel.
Solomon made his capital in Jerusalem.
15 And the king made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees that are in the vale for abundance.
So Solomon made forestation one of his priorities. Cedar trees are normally between 30 and 40 yards tall. Some varieties of cedar can grow about a yard a year. Solomon's reign lasted 40 years. So, apparently, during his reign, he didn't cut down very many cedars, they were all imported.
2 Chronicles 2
1 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD, and an house for his kingdom.
More like he didn't want to disappoint his father, and he had all kinds of building material just laying around.
3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
Ah, so this batch of cedars wasn't for the house of the LORD, but for Solomon's own palace.
5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
Oh, so some of it was for the temple.
Solomon determined he didn't have anyone in Israel good enough to build the place, so he asked Huram (earlier listed as Hiram) to send him a builder too.
7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.
Wow, that's a skilled laborer. A man that can work in gold, silver, brass, iron, and fabrics (purple, crimson and blue are fabrics).
8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,
Cedar, firm and algum trees. Algum, the mystery wood, that no one knows what it is.
13 And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father's,
Any Freemasons want to talk about Hiram Abiff?
14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be put to him, with thy cunning men, and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father.
Hiram (Huram) was the son of the daughters of Dan.
1 Kings 7:14 He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass. And he came to king Solomon, and wrought all his work.
Or maybe he was of Naphtali?
Of course he wasn't from Gad or Zebulun, those two are ALWAYS forgotten.
17 And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.
So Solomon counted everyone who wasn't of the tribes of Israel, and came up with 153,600 people. He then sent most of them off to work cutting trees. 70,000 he sent as heavy lifters; 80,000 to be tree cutters; and he made the remaining 3,600 people be supervisors of the (not quite) enslaved people.
2 Chronicles 3
1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Remember, Ornan, was the place David bought when God decided he didn't want to destroy Jerusalem, but the angel was still standing there, sword drawn, ready to kill.
2 And he began to build in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign.
What else did he do that took 4 years? He's now 33, it's about time he got to building.
17 And he reared up the pillars before the temple, one on the right hand, and the other on the left; and called the name of that on the right hand Jachin, and the name of that on the left Boaz.
Jachin and Boaz; the two pillars in the temple. (Possibly idols)
So what have we learned/relearned today?
1. Solomon was a child at 29.
2. Hiram Abiff was a Dan/Napthalite.
3. All the non-jews in Israel were sent to Lebanon to get the materials needed to build the temple.
