No, I took the "pay more attention to the real world than to a silly holy book" philosophy.

How exactly does "karma" fit into that philosophy?

After all, if every "good" or "bad" thing you do comes back to you threefold, or tenfold, then there must be an intelligence to determine what is "good" or "bad", and then to send the reward or punishment your way.

If you were a true atheist, you wouldn't be looking to something outside yourself to reward or punish your behavior. You'd base it all on "societal values" or some such nonsense. That's why we say that atheists have no morals. As soon as the society they're in says it's OK to rape chickens, kill police officers, or applaud for Britney Spears, they start doing it.

Maybe you are a deist? Do you believe in a god? Deists believe in a god that is obviously no longer here, but gave us everything that we need to survive and thrive. If we choose to thrive or blow ourselves up, is totally up to us. (unless you believe god has everything planned already for you so no sense in trying to be good, cuz if you sin, god made you sin...lol) I know what you mean though. I just say that I am ok with not knowing everything, and I am certainly not going to believe things someone made up because people need to have something to believe in, or just in case so I won't go to hell, even if untrue. There are some nice things about all the major religions, and many more not so nice (mostly that they all HATE eachother even within their own faiths, but that is one of history's oldest stories.
Guess I better get ready for the train to hot tamale town eh? (I'm shaking in my shoes...) I would rather be a good person for the sake of being a good person instead of being a good person so I won't go to hell. Seems less contrived and more honest. It sounds like that may be what you believe to some extent.

the Life force, the desire to live, the will to live is the only good and the only evil. giving others the will to live is the only really good thing, the only really good karma.
and it's an emotional thing. You can give people material things, and they give satisfaction.
