Introduction

We sometimes get Mormon visitors to these forums. Many of them have evidently either never read their own sacred texts or have read them uncritically and simply accepted them as true. Pastor Ezekiel has written an informative essay refuting Mormonism on theological grounds. What I hope to do here is expose the errors in their so-called sacred texts.

Inconsistencies Between the Bible and Mormon Texts

Extra-biblical Texts

Mormons claim to believe the Bible, yet their scriptural canon contains additional material: the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. This in itself is forbidden in the Bible. The earliest warning comes in Deuteronomy.

Deut 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

Centuries later another book was added to the canon of Scripture which gave a similar warning.

Prov 30:5-6
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Finally, in the last book added to the authentic canon, we find this warning, which should be enough to make any Mormon soil his magic underwear.

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

Unfulfilled Prophecy

The Book of Mormon says there would be three days of darkness at Jesus' crucifixion.

Hel 14:20 But behold, as I said unto you concerning another sign, a sign of his death, behold, in that day that he shall suffer death the sun shall be darkened and refuse to give his light unto you; and also the moon and the stars; and there shall be no light upon the face of this land, even from the time that he shall suffer death, for the space of three days, to the time that he shall rise again from the dead.

The Bible says there were three hours of darkness.

Lk 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

The Book of Mormon says Jesus would be born in Jerusalem.

Alma 7:10 And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

The Bible says He was born in Bethlehem (in fulfilment of Mic 5:2).

Mt 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

He then had to flee to Egypt to fulfil Hos 11:1, and then He went the extra mile and moved to Nazareth to fulfil a prophecy that isn't even in the Old Testament (Mt 2:23).

The Bible says we must disregard prophets who make false predictions.

Deut 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Of course, even if these Mormon prophets had been accurate, we would still have to disregard them.

Deut 13:1-3
1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.


Spelling Mistakes

There are obvious spelling mistakes in the Book of Mormon where Smith obviously confused homophones when he was copying from the Bible – for example, "sun" and "son."

3 Ne 25:2 But unto you that fear my name, shall the Son of Righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves in the stall.

Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

He also confused "strait" and "straight" (3 Ne 14:14; 27:33; cf. Mt 7:14), although these errors were corrected in later editions. Such confusion should not have been possible if, as Smith claimed, he had been translating directly from a language unrelated to English.

Internal Inconsistencies

Not only are the Mormon texts inconsistent with the Bible, they are also internally inconsistent.

Now if any Mormons respond to this, I don't want to hear justifications such as, "Well, obviously Alma was paralyzed twice – once for two days and another time for three." That sort of justification is valid when defending seeming discrepancies in the Bible, which we know to be the Word of God (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:20). For example, we know Jesus must have cleansed the Temple twice – once at the beginning of His ministry (Jn 2:13-17) and again towards the end (Lk 19:45-48) – because the Bible tells us so and the Bible cannot be wrong (Jn 10:35; 17:17; 2 Tim 2:15). However, we must apply a different standard to what we know to be the fallible word of man. We must ask ourselves, "What is the most likely explanation for this discrepancy?"

There have been numerous textual revisions to the Book of Mormon. Here are just a few.

So, Mormons, which version is correct? How will you ever know, since the original manuscripts are no longer available, supposedly spirited away by the angel Moroni? The Bible isn't subject to such revisions. We have the original, infallible Word of God.

Historical and Scientific Inaccuracies

Historical Inaccuracies

The Book of Mormon claims the following animals, plants, materials and inventions that we know were introduced by Europeans from 1492 onwards were available in the Americas between 2200 BC and 420 AD:

In 1982 the Smithsonian Institution released this statement on the historical (in)accuracy of the Book of Mormon:

STATEMENT REGARDING THE BOOK OF MORMON

1. The Smithsonian Institution has never used the Book of Mormon in any way as a scientific guide. Smithsonian archaeologists see no direct connection between the archaeology of the New World and the subject matter of the book.

2. The physical type of the American Indian is basically Mongoloid, being most closely related to that of the peoples of eastern, central, and northeastern Asia. Archaeological evidence indicates that the ancestors of the present Indians came into the New World--probably over a land bridge known to have existed in the Bering Strait region during the last Ice Age--in a continuing series of small migrations beginning from about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago.

3. Present evidence indicates that the first people to reach this continent from the East were the Norsemen, who briefly visited the northeastern part of North America around 1000 A.D. and then settled in Greenland. There is no evidence to show that they reached Mexico or Central America.

4. None of the principal Old World domesticated food plants or animals (except the dog) occurred in the New World in pre- Columbian times. This is one of the main lines of evidence supporting the scientific premise that contacts with Old World civilizations, if they occurred, were of very little significance for the development of American Indian civilizations. American Indians had no wheat, barley, oats, millet, rice, cattle, pigs, chickens, horses, donkeys, or camels before 1492. (Camels and horses were in the Americas, along with the bison, mammoth, and mastodon, bat all these animals became extinct around 10,000 B.C. at the time the early big game hunters traveled across the Americas.)

5. Iron, steel, glass, and silk were not used in the New World before 1492 (except for occasional use of unsmelted meteroic iron). Native copper was worked in various locations in pre- Columbian times, but true metallurgy was limited to southern Mexico and the Andean region, where its occurrence in late prehistoric times involved gold, silver, copper, and their alloys, but not iron.

6. There is a possibility that the spread of cultural traits across the Pacific to Mesoamerica and the northwestern coast of South America began several hundred years before the Christian era. However, any such inter-hemispheric contacts appear to have been the results of accidental voyages originating in eastern and southern Asia. It is by no means certain that even such contacts occurred with the ancient Egyptians, Hebrews, or other peoples of Western Asia and the Near East.

7. No reputable Egyptologist or other specialist on Old World archeology, and no expert on New World prehistory, has discovered or confirmed any relationship between archeological remains in Mexico and archeological remains in Egypt.

8. Reports of findings of ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, and other Old World writings in the New World in pre-Columbian contexts have frequently appeared in newspapers, magazines and sensational books. None of these claims has stood up to examination by reputable scholars. No inscriptions using Old World forms of writing have been shown to have occurred in any part of the Americas before 1492 except for a few Norse rune stones which have been found in Greenland.

9. There are copies of the Book of Mormon in the library of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

The National Geographic Society released a similar statement in 1998.

Unlike the Book of Mormon, the Bible contains no historical inaccuracies. If the Bible tells us Abraham owned camels (Gen 24:11) 1,000 years before they are known to have been domesticated, that just means archaeologists have to look harder. Most Mormons, however, seem to have given up hope for their holy book.

It is the personal opinion of the writer that the Lord does not intend that the Book of Mormon, at least at the present time, shall be proved true by any archaeological findings. The day may come when such will be the case, but not now. The Book of Mormon is itself a witness of the truth, and the promise has been given most solemnly that any person who will read it with a prayerful heart may receive the abiding testimony of its truth.

Linguistic Inaccuracies

The original manuscripts of the Book of Mormon were supposedly written in a language called reformed Egyptian. Mormons expect us to believe the ridiculous story that a common language spoken across an entire continent remained unchanged for over 2,500 years and then suddenly fragmented into the multitude of languages that existed by time Europeans arrived. According to linguists reformed Egyptian never existed.


Genetic Inaccuracy

There is no genetic evidence that American Indians are of Middle-Eastern descent as the Book Mormon claims (1 Ne 18; Ether 6).


Anachronistic Quotes

Matthew 3:10 (30-33 AD) is quoted in Alma 5:52 (83 BC). 1 Corinthians 15:53 (53-57 AD) is quoted in Mosiah 16:10 (148 BC). 1 Corinthians 3:15 (53-57 AD) is quoted in 1 Nephi 22:17 (580 BC). And Romans 8:6 (57-58 AD) is quoted in 2 Nephi 9:39 (About 550 BC).

Atrocities in the Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is full divinely-sanctioned violence. Here are a few examples.

God commands Nephi to kill Laban.

1 Ne 4:10-13, 18
10 And it came to pass that I was constrained by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him.
11 And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands. Yea, and I also knew that he had sought to take away mine own life; yea, and he would not hearken unto the commandments of the Lord; and he also had taken away our property.
12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands;
13 Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief . . .
18 Therefore I did obey the voice of the Spirit, and took Laban by the hair of the head, and I smote off his head with his own sword.

The slaughter of American Indians by Europeans was justified.

1 Ne 13:14-15
14 And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.
15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.

God will make people eat their own flesh and drink their own blood.

2 Ne 6:18 And I will feed them that oppress thee, with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

God will make people kill each other and eat the flesh of their own arm.

2 Ne 19:19-20
19 Through the wrath of the Lord of Hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother.
20 And he shall snatch on the right hand and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand and they shall not be satisfied; they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm . . .

God will smite His people with famine and pestilence.

Mosiah 12:4 And it shall come to pass that I will smite this my people with sore afflictions, yea, with famine and with pestilence; and I will cause that they shall howl all the day long.

God helped the Nephites slaughter the Amlicites.

Alma 2:18-19
18 Nevertheless the Lord did strengthen the hand of the Nephites, that they slew the Amlicites with great slaughter, that they began to flee before them.
19 And it came to pass that the Nephites did pursue the Amlicites all that day, and did slay them with much slaughter, insomuch that there were slain of the Amlicites twelve thousand five hundred thirty and two souls; and there were slain of the Nephites six thousand five hundred sixty and two souls.

The god described in the Book of Mormon is obviously nothing like our dear, sweet Lord. Is it any wonder that the Mormons have such a bloody history? Probably the most infamous incident is the Mountain Meadows Massacre, in which 120 Arkansan emigrants were slaughtered after they had surrendered to the Mormon militia led by John D. Lee.

However, most Mormons are ignorant of their history and their holy books. They have never taken the time to examine their beliefs. I would be so embarrassed if it turned out I had clung to false beliefs all my life when all the time the truth was only a few keystrokes away. Even a cursory Google search would show the Mormon religion to be based on lies.

Hel 14:20 But behold, as I said unto you concerning another sign, a sign of his death, behold, in that day that he shall suffer death the sun shall be darkened and refuse to give his light unto you; and also the moon and the stars; and there shall be no light upon the face of this land, even from the time that he shall suffer death, for the space of three days, to the time that he shall rise again from the dead.

The Bible says there were three hours of darkness.

Lk 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

Well that's just ridiculous. Do these "mormons" still use single fluid optics? God explains (really there are so many references) how He provides two fluids

• FLUID 1 light
• FLUID 2 darkness

Darkness can be thick darkness, can be seen distinct from the other fluid, can be approached and entered, from Exodus:

20:21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

But just try explaining any of that to Mormons. They'll turn on a dime from "You must believe every word" to "That's ridiculous trivia." Their picking and choosing of the parts that matter and their imperviousness to evidence and logic show that once believers in false religions have made up their mind to believe something, they will typically believe it, no matter how ludicrous.
