Someone also mentioned that Jesus was executed for high treason? No, it was for violating the Pox Romana, or basically, the Jewish high priests and such were all having a fit because Jesus was called "The King of the Jews" and so forth. The Romans only helped in his execution as a means of trying to calm things down.
To be more blunt, they never intended to -execute- him. They wanted to punish him and be done with it, but the community wouldn't settle for that. Thus, the reason Pilate washed his hands. He didn't want anything to do with what they did to him after he handed him over to them.
