Police are bracing themselves for protests over a controversial new image of the Last Supper.

The picture depicts Jesus surrounded by gay, lesbian and transsexual disciples and is being guarded by armed police.

The new take on Leonardo Da Vinci's painting is by controversial Swedish artist Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin.

It shows Jesus wearing a dress and high heels, surrounded by his disciples who are dressed in S&M gear and lingerie.

It is being shown at The Ecce Homo exhibition in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

The exhibition has to be surrounded by 2,000 police amid threats of a massive protest.

City officials have already cancelled a planned Gay Pride march which was meant to coincide with the end of the exhibition, due to threats of violent counter demonstrations by the ultra right wing Movement Dveri.

They'll protect this as "free speech", because it's insulting Jesus, but when students put a "Muhammad" nametag on a pineapple, they're thrown out into the street!

Among the material displayed on our stall was a pineapple. We labelled this pineapple “Mohammed”, to encourage discussion about blasphemy, religion, and liberty, as well as to celebrate the fact that we live in a country in which free speech is protected, and where it is lawful to call a pineapple by whatever name one chooses.

Towards the end of the afternoon, we were informed by a member of RUSU staff that there had been complaints about the pineapple, despite the fact that no complaints had been made at any point to anybody on the stall. Our commitment to freedom of expression meant that we refused to remove the pineapple from our stall. After a few minutes, we were told by another member of RUSU staff that “Either the pineapple goes, or you do” . . .


Shortly afterwards, the second RUSU staff member returned and ordered RAHS to leave the Freshers’ Fayre. At this point, a group of around five students, some of whom self-identified as Muslim, approached the stall and began to criticise us, asking and telling us to remove the pineapple. Though these students mainly engaged in discussion, one removed the label from the pineapple without our permission.

It really bothers me when tax money is spent to protect artists who ridicule Jesus. Freedom of speech does not mean you can say, or paint, whatever you want against about our Lord.

Whether in some atheist country or in the Christian U. S., governments should let dirty atheist artists to fend for themselves.
