okay, i'm going to be open and honest here as i'm about to get banned from this site anyway. i signed up here because i watched a documentary on america's baptist churches. you were portrated rather negatatively and i thought to myself, surely people this narrow minded, this delusional, this downright INSANE can't really exist.

I was genuinely interested in your culture, the way things work, and your beliefs. So I had a look through this and some other pages, and still can't quite believe it. that documentary got it spot on. it was something by louis theroux.

anyway, since there is nothing i can say to make you realise the vast, VAST extent to which you and your church's way of life is flawed (i am just a woman, after all, a brainless robot which people like you marry to ensure the neighbours don't suspect your heavily, HEAVILY suppressed homosexuality) i can do nothing more than mirror your agruing style, although a famous philosopher once said arguing with a fundie is like trying to make the tide go out by yelling at it.

anyway, if i'm perfectly honest i feel deeply sorry for you. your belief system and fucked up logic has obviously been bred into your family for generations and it saddens me that said system has not died out yet. i'll leave you with some food for thought. probably not, but i have your kind constantly trying to save me with bible verses so i ask you to read something "crazy":

The bible is most likely the memoirs of some random pauper who discovered illegal drugs by accident and had a psychadelic experience, or a story book that has been twisted waaaay out of hand.

Don't get me wrong, i am an agnostic. I am well aware of the fact that there COULD be a higher being. But there is no solid proof, and for science we have centuries worth of cold, hard evidence.

It doesn't take much imagination. Let's pretend the scenario plays out as you say: She walks home dressed like a slut, a man's sinful nature gets the best of him and he falls prey to lust. He takes her forcefully (arguably, since she did "ask" for it in that she clearly advertised herself as "open for business" if you get my meaning). Now if she were to trust the LORD, I mean really, truly trust Him, He would be faithful to His promises and bless her richly! Just think this beautiful world we live in came about after the Flood! God took tragedy (willfully killing every plant, animal, insect and human save the few that He deigned to fit on the ark) and brought forth great triumph! This triumph I'm talking about is of course JESUS! So a woman who is otherwise a whore may be saved from the eternal pits of Hell by learning about JESUS because of a rape-experience!

But does the father of the girl have a right to refuse the dowery?...Or say the father is a widower, and his only daughter was who was raped, but shes his cook and house cleaner and he doesnt wish to sell her?

I already answered these points.

i one hundred percent agree with everything this man has to say. ok, the bible implies that she must marry her rapist but is that really relevent in the context of modern society? REALLY? the treatment of women, especially hundreds/thousands of years ago, is appalling and in some cultures still is appalling.

put yourself in her shoes for a minute (be you male or female): a PERSON, a stranger, who is of much greater physical strength pins you to the ground, and forces things upon you of a sexual nature in a humilliating and painful fashion, in full view of the LORD himself (proof that the perpitraitor is a satan worshipping cretin, if he is willing to do THAT in the presence of God), leaving you with both mental and physical scars which will take a long time to heal.

I am asking you to emphasize with the woman for this part: After this horrible ordeal, you find out that you are carrying this brute's bastard child? and imagine if that child was born? imagine growing up knowing the story of your conception, with a rapist for a father and a terrified victim for a mother? the child should be given to the lord to be SAVED, and the evil thing that did this to any fellow human should be thrown in prison and raped homosexually by his fellow scum.

She's not crazy, she speaks the truth. The victim here is the girl.
Usually rape is a crime done by a male who has a domination problem. Meaning that he cannot stand for a woman to be free to do as she wishes and plans on shaming her.
It is also usually done by someone she knows and not because she dresses or acts promiscuously, but because she is shy, afraid, and easily overtaken.
Men who do this are the lowest of the low in society and deserve punishment to the full extent of the law.

As for stoning the woman if she refuses? That may be an interpretation.

Brother, I don't know what I was thinking. I have misread the plain and simple language of God's Word.

Rereading Deuteronomy 20 I realize that not only must a woman who is raped marry her rapist, but she must be stoned after they are married, when she fails to produce the tokens of virginity. So she must sleep with her rapist a second time on their honeymoon and then be executed.

Where are you getting $190?

A shekel is a measure of weight. 50 shekels of silver is a volume, not a dollar amount.

Meanwhile, you obviously have no clue about the value of a woman in God's eyes, and why this law is good for women.

You see, a virgin girl can be married off, and often bring a dowry to her father. This is recompense for his efforts in feeding and raising her until she is at a marriagable age.

What happens if a man rapes the girl? She is no longer a marriagable asset. Her value has been destroyed. Her potential husband can't be certain that he'll be the father of the firstborn!

Therefore, the rapist is required to compensate her father (the dowry) and marry her, and is not permitted to divorce her. This keeps the father from being forced to take care of a spinster for the rest of her life, and allows the woman to have a husband and children.

As for stoning the woman if she refuses? That may be an interpretation.

I suspect the father could accept the dowry and kick the girl out if she refuses to marry.
