          Re: Dungeons & Dragons?

The whole satanism thing is urban legend. There is nothing to fear. It is a game. It is simply fun. However, to allay your existing fears, I would simply ask your son about it. Ask him two questions: (1) How do you play it? (2) What is your character all about? Be interested. I guarantee that he will be excited that you are asking. You may even find he is playing a cleric or paladin--the typical lawful-good characters in the game. Ask non-judgmental questions and give the strength of your relationship with him the benefit of the doubt. Also, let him host the game so you can observe it. You can always discuss anything with him afterward. I would try to play it with him...simply make a character that is lawful-good to reflect your personality and have him gamemaster. You make the decisions for you character and try to succeed against the story goal he comes up with. If you don't portray your character as lawful-good, you get penalized. There's lots of rules to learn, so plan on spending some time reading. You will figure out quickly that is simply a different game to play. It's cooperative, story-based, imagination-driven and fun.

Also, the game is now a product of Wizards of the Coast, a business of Hasbro. Not sure if you agree with their line of toys and games, but if you visit their webpage www.wizards.com you can learn more about it. Brace yourself for things like monsters, spells, warriors, etc. They are all elements in the typical fantasy gaming genre. Nothing evil. Just storytelling. Just a company selling a fun game along with its other brands.

                    Re: Dungeons & Dragons?

With all due respect, Reverend, you are speaking to exceptions (and unfounded at that) that have played out historically in a myriad of other social circumstances completely unrelated to D&D. Be careful to isolate them as you have. Let's not cast these stones without reflecting on where churches and religions have gone wrong in the past either. It's strange how the Bible speaks to demons, Satan, evil, sin, in just as much detail but manages to remain innocent of leading people down the wrong path. If I am not mistaken, my first conscious introduction to the things of such nature was through my catechism.

What I find interesting, Rev. Jim Osborne, is that you are missing an opportunity here. You could simply embrace the game for what it is--a game with a specific structure of rules. There is absolutely nothing in the game that requires or even encourages evil or satanism. All that is required is the imagination to tell a good story. You would see that you could forge a story to your liking--full of what you think would be good and right and devoid of what you despise as evil. It could be completely biblical in nature if you wish. However, you would still need to tell a good story with risks and challenges for the players to overcome. You would probably do well to bring more young people into your congregation and give them a better sense of belonging rather than creating a divide. For example, instead of hit points which reflect bodily damage, you could substitute them for spirit/sin points that reflect the spiritual damage leading a character closer to damnation. I am not scoffing or ridiculing here...I am totally serious. With some tweaking of the vocabulary, the game could be shaped for that genre which could actually help you reach out to certain folks. Thanks for the opportunity to debate this.

This is not a debate. It's just you with your big mouth and your satanic manifesto. What makes you so sure that you're right and that Jesus is wrong?
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

I never said Jesus is wrong...I agree with everything he teaches. However, I am sure my interpretation is not the same literal interpretation that you have.

Also, how do you know I am not Jesus testing you right now?

Pastor Ezekiel has already sent me a nastygram regarding my previous postings. I didn't see this post when I replied to his nastygram. I will refrain from further posts. Why are all of you people so angry? Jesus teaches peace, love, understanding and most importantly forgiveness. He may have learned of this philosophy when, during the unaccounted years of his life, he went to the Far East and learned Buddhism. That is why I forgive all of you. This is my last posting.

2 Peter 1:20: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

I'm guessing that you've never actually read the entire KJV1611b Bible. We follow EACH AND EVERY WORD of the Bible, not just the sweet-sounding ones. I'd like to recommed THIS sermon for you to read, which delves into the subject of Biblical interpretation.

Well, that's all the proof needed. The guy admits to playing D&D and then tries to say our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ learned FROM THE BUDDHA. That fat little demon which has spawned graven images worshipped from Nanking to my local Super Buffet ain't the Jesus I worship.

Do people believe that Satan would advertise his game, "Hey, come play this and roast in hell for all eternity with me, Satan"? No, he's subtle and wants to make you fond of sorcery and next thing you know, not only will you be suffering witches to live, you'll probably be shacked up rolling dice with a bunch of wiccan queers.
Jesus will return the favor with nails of truth and the hammer of righteousness.
