There has been a disturbing trend in these past few years of parents coming up with weird names for their children in their desperate attempt to be original and clever.
Hollyweird types are most notorious for this. The Brangelina Demon named its daughter "Shiloh" for its own selfish purpose, not because of any Biblical connection.
Gywneth Paltrow, the oddly name daughter of the oddly named Blythe Danner, named her daughter, "Apple". And of course, there are Dakota Fanning, River Phoenix, Rumer Willis among others.
Of particular concern is the many parents who believe in giving their children "gender neutral" names, which is pretty much setting them up for homerism.
My parents were careful to give me a girl's name, if for no other reason because they had so many sons that they had run out of suitable boy's names.
In my rebellion years, I took on a boy's nickname, much to my parents' dismay.
My husband tried to address me using this name, but the first time that he sent me flowers, he became appropriately embarrassed. Thus, he began weaning me away from "Footsoldier" back to properly feminine, "Handmaiden."
I gave up that unfortunate nickname around the same time as my heart led me back to the Lord and the supportive fellowship of LBC.
Here's a question: If a name has a diminutive that can be gender neutral, is it a sin to give the child the full name, thereby possibly opening the door to homerism? I am thinking of names like Pat, which as the vile atheist, Julia Swiney, showed us, can be a name for a chunky girl, or a doughy boy.
Ponderingly Yours,
Handmaiden
