If, in fact, it were a genuine reflection of our world today, it would be a real prophecy, wouldn't it?

As it is, the image on the shroud is alleged by the Catlicks to be one of Christ. Now, we know that the Catlicks were excellent forgers, so they were not going to put an image on it that looked nothing like Jesus, were they?

Just because it has some fancy Latin name, doesn't mean that Jesus didn't put that idea in our mind. If I were Jesus, I would see it as a bonus if people saw me and decided to become True Christians: I think we can say that 'pareidolia' is a gift from God.

It's not surprising that human-shaped forms might be interpreted as religious figures, especially around the religious holidays. People see these images for the same reason that they see faces in clouds, Rorschach blots and coffee stains. This phenomenon, called pareidolia, is well known in psychology, and it is the cause of many supposedly mysterious and miraculous events (including the famous "Jesus in the Tortilla"). Whether the sightings are the result of a miracle or a mundane psychological process, they are welcomed by the faithful.

The same way we know everything else that we know about Jesus that isn't written in the Gospels--by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said,

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13

See also I Corinthians 2:10: But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

This explains why no True Christian™ is ever wrong when speaking about matters of faith.
