    Polygamy

I have a question for you folks that are far more learned in Scripture than I am. I know that polygamy is an acccepted state of marriage in the Old Testament. It is illegal here in the USA, and of course we are commanded to obey secular law. So my question is, if it were not for secular law, would it still be Biblically permissible?

    Re: Polygamy

Not only WOULD it be, it IS. The Bible stands as written. Of course one then wonders why any sane would want more than one wife....or even one.

"Polygamy is one wife too many. Monogamy is the same."
    -Popularly misattributed to Oscar Wilde.

In point of fact, the word 'polygamy' encompasses polygyny, polyandry and group marriage. I normally don't discuss these sorts of things, but in this case I thought it would be...ummmm... big of me.

Pastor Al, I was of course referring to polygyny. I should have been more clear. I do thank you for the response. Your counsel about the sanity of taking more than one wife is well taken.

          Re: Polygamy

Now that I know that taking on another wife is both scripturally sound and technically legal (as long as I don’t apply for a marriage license or claim her on my taxes) I have been thinking in terms of a cost benefit analysis on the subject. On the minus side there is the possibility of exponential nagging which will require more beatings than I am accustomed to administer. My sanity would be in question. An extra wife might be difficult to obtain given the cultural bias against polygyny. There is also the added financial burden. However there would be some benefits. My wife is barren, so I would have the opportunity to father Soldiers for Christ. The financial burden could be mitigated by firing the house Negros and splitting their tasks among the two wives. The financial burden could be further ameliorated by a third wife which could be put to work in a paying job, assuming that is Biblical (I rely on the Landover Baptist Church Pastors for guidance on that). Plus a third wife is an additional opportunity to father even more Soldiers for Christ.

So there’s my dilemma. If I go the route of obtaining an additional wife, common sense SEEMS to dictate that it would be better to obtain two additional wives. Even though the beatings required for three wives seems tiring, it would seem to be a more sound financial decision to go with three wives than two.

Brothers and sisters, I seek your counsel.

          Yours in Christ
