  • 50 years of Wedded Bliss

That's right, brothers and sisters! Following Jesus' commandments to marry one member of the opposite gender for life, Mrs. Wierdsbe and I are preparing to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. People have been giving many suggestions for the gift I should give her, and before you all start jumping in on that one, just remember, I've had 50 years of practice at this.

So here's what I do on all sorts of gift-giving occasions, and it's made her proud and honored to be called Mrs. Dr. Warren Wierdsbe all these years.

I spend some time as we approach the occasion, looking around the house, peeking in all the cupboards, closets, laundry room, basement, etc. In fact, there's not a corner of the house she is responsible for that I don't inspect very closely. She thinks nothing of this, as I often do spot inspections to make sure she is covering her wifely duties properly. She kicked against this some when younger but a couple of timely beatings (and her parents' support) taught her the wisdom of Godly Biblical teachings about the home.

After I have gone through the house like this, I will find something we need in the house anyway, purchase that and have it wrapped up nicely with a bow. For instance, for Christmas one year, I found her ironing board cover was frayed. She was as pleased as punch to find a new one under the tree!

For her birthday last October, I got her a new pair of golf shoes. She doesn't golf, but she just loves to wash my SUV, and in winter it gets quite icy out there. So she is happy to have the extra traction.

This year, for our 50th anniversary, I plan to follow the same system. I've been inspecting her each week now leading up to all our children, grandchildren, church elders, well-wishers, students, etc. coming into our home to wish us well and give us the honors I have earned as a professor of Bible, and she has earned as my wife.

This year I have decided to replace her reel-type push mower with and actual rotary gas-powered lawnmower! She is going to be absolutely thrilled with this labor-saving device, which will help her keep our yard absolutely perfect in much less time. Of course, I will keep the reel type mower just in case she gets uppity (which, to her credit, she hasn't done in years).

This is what love is all about. She has served God, me, and our family so well for so many years, it seemed the least I could do.

So remember, men, skillful gift giving is one of the ingredients of many years of peaceful married life.

    In Christ
    Warren

Dr. W, that's very benevolent of you to allow your wife to mow your lawn. I hope she does an adequate job. Does she do the fertilizing and re-seeding, too?
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

Of course, Nobar. God has blessed me mightily with a virtuous woman. Of course, the Psalm doesn't discuss the strength and discipline it takes to teach a woman to be virtuous, but there it is. So while I tend to the Lord's work with the flock at the Old 56 restaurant (morning coffee, etc.), she is doing what God intended.

      Psalm 31 (AV1611)

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. 31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

      In Christ,
      Warren

Thank you for those beautiful bible verses. I am not ashamed to admit that they brought tears to my eyes!

Very often, when one hears an inspiring bible verse, it prompts an individual to make positive changes in their lives so they can develop a closer relationship with Jesus. After reading that inspiring verse, I prayed for guidence from the Lord. And He told me to beat my wife until she finishes mowing the back yard.

        Thank you so much!

        In Him,
        Monty
