The Best Bible verses and some thoughts

Here's some comments I have about some of the most beautiful passages in the Bible.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This has often been said to be the best verse in the Bible, and a perfect summary of the Gospels, and I agree. It is so reaffirming to hear these words, to know that if we believe in Christ we shall be saved, and that everyone else will burn forever in eternity. And of course, we know that the word "world" in the original Greek is "kosmos", which in the Bible does not refer to everyone in the world, but to a specific group, in this case the group of True Believers that God sent Jesus for.

Leviticus 19:18Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Yes, love thy neighbor as thyself, which Jesus called the second greatest commandment. Of course, how to show this love is hard to understand without the beautiful verse preceding it, "17Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him." To love our neighbor, we must tell them what they are doing wrong to save them from hell.

John 6: 37All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Here we see the awesome predestination of God. Only who God chooses to be saved shall saved. We as humans have no free will in the matter. We can neither choose to be saved or choose to give up our salvation. God controls everything.
John 1: 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word was what Jesus was before He was made flesh. As we see here, the Word is different from God, but is also the same as God. When "The Word" became flesh, He began to be the Son of God, although He was still the Word, and the Father, that is God, which is also the Holy Spirit, by which the Son who was Word made flesh was conceived to a virgin. Jesus was there since the beginning, but God is also eternal, so the beginning is really an infinite and unending amount of time from before the world was created. Even then God had already planned that He Himself, that is the Word, which He is Father to, would become flesh and die for the sins of humanity. He had already planned that man would fall, that billions would suffer and go to hell, so that He could show His love by letting His Son who was Himself since the beginning die for those select few He loved.

John 14: 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Here we see that Jesus is the ultimate truth. He is the only path to salvation. Except for Christians, nobody will go to heaven. All other religions and philosophies are 100% wrong.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Here we see the Great Commission. Jesus orders us to teach every nation in the world. It is our duty to force our beliefs on other cultures and bring them in, lest they go to hell. It also shows the baptism is essential to salvation (for those faith-alone folk), but that they must also be taught first (there goes infantile baptism).

    Romans 3: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

A reminder that everyone was evil before they were saved. Of course, as we know from other parts of the Bible (particularly 1 John) once we receive the grace of God we become incapable of sinning.

Ephesians 2: 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Again we see that human beings themselves can do nothing to be saved. God must choose to give the gift of grace, which leads to faith, which saves you. Without God's intervention, you are evil and will go to hell.

Genesis 1: 1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The opening lines of the Bible, the introduction to the creation story that explains how God formed the world through His words in six days, how he formed the solid dome around the earth known as the sky, how he formed all the living creatures in the world on one day six thousand years ago, and formed the first two people, Adam, made from dirt, and Eve, made out of Adam's rib.

Acts 1: 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

It is by the Holy Spirit we have power. Without it, which is given by God as a gift with no bearing on any of our actions, we cannot do anything good.

2 Timothy 3: 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

From this we learn that EVERY SINGLE WORD of the Bible is inspired by God. Take no heed to those that say the Bible is only a book written by flawed men, there is nothing wrong in it, and we must use it to point out to others what is wrong with them and how they should behave.

Romans 10: 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Of course, we already know from other verses you can only do this if God allows you to. But it is good to show that those who don't believe in Jesus go to hell.
1 John 4: 19We love him, because he first loved us.

A reminder of why we (that is, Christians) love God - but He loved us, and so bestowed us with grace which made it impossible for us not to love Him.

Ephesians 4: 32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

And since we know God only forgives Christians, we also know this verse refers only to our actions towards other Christians.

Luke 23: 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Here we see the depths of Jesus' mercy. He prays to His Father (who is Himself) to forgive those who are crucifying Him. Of course, unless they later repented of their sins (by the provocation of the Holy Spirit) they of course cannot be forgiven. But it was nice of Jesus to say, anyway.

Luke 6: 37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Of course, as we know from other passages, we are supposed to judge and condemn, this is simply a warning against hypocritical practices - ie, if I judge someone for adultery, then I must understand I will be judged for adultery if I commit it. Therefore, I should not commit adultery, but should judge and condemn it in others.

1 John 4: 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Since God protects us, we need never be afraid of anything. Anyone who ever feels fear does not trust God.

1 John 3: 11For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

That is, we should rebuke one another to save each other from hell.

Psalm 61: 8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

What God wants is for us to praise Him forever. Sames reasonable to me.

Galatians 3: 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

All those in Jesus are one, against everyone else in the world.

Matthew 19: 26But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

It's important to see the verse preceding this one: "

25When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?" It is possible for God to save everyone. But God chooses to only save those He wants to.

Luke 1:37For with God nothing shall be impossible.

It's important to remember God can do anything, it keeps us humble. For example, if we pray and it does not get answered. We know it is because God did not want to answer that prayer for some reason.

Galatians 2: 20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

When we are born again, we cease being ourselves and God takes over our body.

1 Samuel 2: 2There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

    All other religions are fake.

John 3: 34For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

Only those with the Holy Spirit speak the words of God. Everyone who is not a Christian can only speak evil.

    Ephesians 5: 25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

    Of course, context is important.
    "24Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself."
Wives must be obedient to their husbands as men are to God, and men must try their wives as Jesus treated us - to make them/us perect (without spot or wrinkle) in order to present this glory to himself (God/the husband). We should love our wives so that we can love ourselves, as no doubt God loves us so He can love Himself.

Matthew 16: 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Here we see we should not be concerned about being happy in this world, but devout ourselves entirely to saving our souls.

Psalm 4: 8I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

So true. And from this we know anyone with insomnia, or anyone who has ever died in their sleep, is evil.

Psalm 34: 13Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Yes, keep your tongue from evil (I'm looking at you, homersexuals!)

Proverbs 4: 23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

This is telling us to keep our thoughts (which originate in the heart) from darkness.

Matthew 7: 1Judge not, that ye be not judged.

Of course, reading on this is merely a warning not judge hypocritically.

Ephesians 5: 14Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

People who sin are dead in Christ. Christians do not sin.

Colossians 3: 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Let God control you, and be thankful for it.

Exodus 33: 20And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

Anyone who sees God face will die. The best you can hope for, as Moses did, is to see God's back parts. Although all things are possible through God, He must not want us to be able to see His face and live for some reason.

John 15: 13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus gave up His life for His friends, nobody else.

Philippians 1: 3I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

We should be thankful to God when people, such as the Philippians, are in fellowship with Him.

2 Chronicles 7:14If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

God only listens to the prayers, forgives the sins, and heals those who humble themselves, pray, seek His face (though let's hope they don't actually get to see it) and stop sinning. Everyone else He ignored. And this can only happen to His people, which He has called. Likewise, we can conclude those whose prayers aren't being answered are not God's people.

Isaiah 40: 31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

People who get tired do not serve the Lord.

1 John 4: 16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Yes, and God only loves those who believe in Jesus. The preceding verse: "

15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God"

Psalms 30: 5For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

This of course refers only to the saints, "4Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness."

Psalm 27: 1The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I also like the verse after it: "2When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell." If your enemies stumble before you, you know God is your light, salvation, and strength (you have nothing to do with it). If not, you know you must be one of the wicked enemies.

Revelation 3:20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Of course, there is a precondition to having God over for supper: "19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent."

Deuteronomy 31: 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Be not afraid of them. Who is "them"?

"1And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.
2And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
3The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.
4And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.
5And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you."
    Amen!

2 Corinthians 11: 11Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.

The Apostle Paul shows us how we should talk to our loved ones.

Acts 2: 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is conditional on repenting and getting baptized. This is in agreement with every other passage in the Bible, of course.

Psalm 23: 1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The Lord provides everything for his flock. If you want anything, you are not one of God's sheep.

    Psalm 108: 5Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;

Great passage, but wonder why God should be exalted? "6That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me." And remember, only His beloved will be saved.

1 Peter 5: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

God takes care of all your troubles. If you have worries, God doesn't care for you.

Psalm 73: 26My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

So true, and see to the next verse to see what God does to those whose hearts He doesn't strengthen: "27For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee."

John 6: 54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

    What a beautiful metaphor!

    Romans 12: 12Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

God is all you need to solve your problems.
