    Mardi Gras (Pancake day)

Today is Shrove Tuesday in the UK. (pancake day) Its also known as mardi gras in some states in America and is mainly celebrated in South America.
Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival always 47 days before Easter Sunday. and is the day before lent.

What are you giving up for lent ?

mardi gras translates to Fat Tuesday in the French Language. the meaning of this is people are supposed to eat up the cream and any rich foods which you may be giving up for lent
    What is Lent?

    Lent is a Christian Festival
Lent is the time when Christians prepare for Easter by thinking of things they have done wrong. The forty days (not counting Sundays) before is known as Lent. This is the time of year in England when the days begin to lengthen with the coming of Spring.

The weeks of Lent were once the time when new Christians, who were to be baptized on Easters were taught about the Christian faith and life. Those who had already been baptized thought again about the promises they had once made and promise to be true to them. Lent was a time for spring-cleaning lives, as well as homes.
    When does Lent begin?
Lent begins on ash Wednesday the day after pancake day and , six and a half weeks before Easter day . The last week of Lent begins with Palm Sunday which celebrates the day Jesus entered Jerusalem and the people lay down palms at his feet.
Lent begins on Wednesday 6 February 2008
When does Lent end? When is Lent over?
Lent lasts for 40 days and ends the day before Eater Sunday which is known as Holy Sunday . Sundays are not counted in the forty days.
In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), with the beginning of the mass of the Lord's Supper.
Why does Lent last for 40 days?
The 40 days mark the 40 years of the Israelites going through the desert and the traditional 40 days of Jesus fasting in the desert.
Why are Sundays not counted in the 40 days?
Sundays are always a day of celebration in the Christian church and so they cannot be included in the 40 days of Lent. Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.
    What happens during Lent?
    Fasting
During Lent, Christians used to fast (give up food) but now a days some people try to give up their favourite food, such as chocolate, and not giving into temptation. Others might give up all dairy products. The Orthodox Church keeps Lent more strictly and people give up both meat and dairy products.

Lent is a time when Christians remember the 40 days and nights Jesus spent alone in the desert without food being tempted by the Devil. Jesus used this time to prepare for His work by fasting and praying.

Some Protestants, including many Baptists, not much is known about this traditional holy season, other than the idea that it means giving up something from candy or caffeine to broccoli or brussels sprouts. As a general rule, Lent is not important to Baptists. However, it should be, Lent provides an opportunity for believers to prepare our hearts for the extraordinary event of Easter. The days leading up to remembering the death, burial and resurrection of King Jesus should serve as a type of tenderizer for our hearts.

        Correct, we don't.
For Jesus never commanded us to do some kind of half-assed imitation of His days in the desert! Not even a good imitation.
Abstaining from one's favourite food.. What a load of liebral "Christian" claptrap nonsense.

Bro Izzy, please don't post such things on our forum.
Lent isn't a Christian holiday, it's a papist invention that mocks Jesus hardships in the desert.

Brother Izzy, please keep this pagan filth out of our forum!

No, I don't mean Mother Martini, I mean this Lent nonsense! Here is part of a delightfully informative article on the subject of this Lenten filth!

People who observe Lent may be religious, dedicated and sincere—but they are sincerely wrong.

Let’s examine Lent, its practices and customs, its historic and religious origins, and its true meaning from the Bible’s perspective, not from the “traditions of men” (Mark 7:7-9).
Believe it or not, Lent was never observed by Christ or His apostles. He commanded His disciples to “Go you therefore, and teach all nations…teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus never commanded them to observe Lent or Easter. He did, however, command them to keep Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. In fact, during His last Passover on earth, Christ gave detailed instructions on how to observe the Passover service. He also instituted new Passover symbols (John 13:1-17).
Lent was not observed by the first century Church! It was first addressed by the church at Rome during the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325, when Emperor Constantine officially recognized that church as the Roman Empire’s state religion. Any other form of Christianity that held to doctrines contrary to the Roman church was considered an enemy of the state.
Paul warned against using self-denial as a tool to rely on your own will. He called it “will worship.” “Wherefore if you be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are you subject to ordinances, (touch not; taste not; handle not; which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh” (Col. 2:20-23).
Coming from the Anglo-Saxon Lencten, meaning “spring,” Lent originated in the ancient Babylonian mystery religion. “The forty days’ abstinence of Lent was directly borrowed from the worshippers of the Babylonian goddess…Among the Pagans this Lent seems to have been an indispensable preliminary to the great annual festival in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Tammuz” (The Two Babylons).

Tammuz was the false Messiah of the Babylonians—a satanic counterfeit of Jesus Christ!

The Feast of Tammuz was usually celebrated in June (also called the “month of Tammuz”). Lent was held 40 days before the feast, “celebrated by alternate weeping and rejoicing.” This is why Lent means “spring”; it took place from spring to early summer.

The Bible records ancient Judah worshipping this false Messiah: “Then He brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord’s house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz” (Ezek. 8:14-15). This was a great abomination in God’s eyes!

But why did the church at Rome institute such a pagan holiday?

“To conciliate the Pagans to nominal Christianity, Rome, pursuing its usual policy, took measures to get the Christian and Pagan festivals amalgamated, and, by a complicated but skillful adjustment of the calendar, it was found no difficult matter, in general, to get Paganism and Christianity—now far sunk in idolatry—in this as in so many other things, to shake hands” (The Two Babylons).

The Roman church replaced Passover with Easter, moving the pagan Feast of Tammuz to early spring, “Christianizing” it. Lent moved with it.

Truth is Truth, Martini. Even if a Godless Atheist or Unitarian sat on the street corner relaying this information, it would still be TRUTH.

So quit with the red herrings, attempting to distract Brother Izzy from the TRUTH about your pagan blasphemies!
