Some of the comments that have alarmed me most of this board relate to a belief in some quarters that the Law of the Old Testament is somehow applicable today. The burning of witches, stoning of children, the slaughter of unbelievers, the necessity of tithing, and the uncleanliness of women are just some of the things that have caught my eye in recent days.
Well, how many of you enjoy a good hog roast? And what about that t-shirt that is made from 80% cotton and 20% polyester? And as for your mortgage - don't you know that charging interest is against the Law, as well as eating pork and wearing mixed fabrics?
Seems to me there's some cherry-picking going on here.
LBC is the only Baptist church I have ever heard of that fails to accept the difference between the requirements of the Old Testament Law and the New Covenant of grace. Scripture plainly teaches that the we can gain no favor whatsoever by sabbath-keeping, tithing, etc. We are no longer in bondage to the law, but are liberated from it and saved by grace (Ephesians 1: 7-10).As Christians, we are changed from children of the devil to children of God. We now walk in the new nature which naturally keeps THE SPIRIT of the Law of God, by nature (2 Cor:3-6). We are no longer under supervision of the law (Galatians 3:24-25).
This belief in the applicability of Old Testament law to contemporary society is not only theologically unsound, but it is downright blasphemous. Christ fulfilled the law on dying on the cross. To say that the law still stands is like saying Christ's sacrifice wasn't quite good enough. The Bible goes so far to say that those who live under the Law are CURSED (Galatians 3:10).
So I would ask the relevant contributors who spend some time today readings Galatians 3 and Ephesians 1. Read prayerfully, and with an open mind, and the Lord will guide you. In the meantime, please STOP using the law as a measuring stick for how 'Christian' folks are, because I've a feeling there aren't too many members of LBC who would measure up.
God Bless,
Jacques.
