Is self flagellation and cutting oneself considered a sin?

Re: Flagellation.
Often in history Christians have sought to bring themselves closer to Christ by experiencing a small measure of the suffering that God had inflicted on His holy Son. Sometimes this has included scourging or flagellation.
Flagellates are very common. I believe that some examples can be found in every country on Earth. Personally, I feel that most flagellates are not particularly sophisticated -- in matters of worship, at any rate. Students of God's esoteric aspects they are not!
I have made many observations of flagellates, though certainly I am no expert. In most cases I would say that their movements in response to the Spirit are blind and clumsy as opposed to insightful and filled with grace. But they have the humble part down pat.
As far as self-cutting, this is mostly associated with emus and masochists and savages from New Guinea. Might as well slice your lip open and stick a tea-saucer in it, and ram a couple of boar's tusks through your septum. The Lord is NOT amused.
