RNC chief: Gay marriage will burden small business

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Republicans can reach a broader base by recasting gay marriage as an issue that could dent pocketbooks as small businesses spend more on health care and other benefits, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Saturday.

Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.

"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."

As Steele talked about ways the party could position itself, he also poked fun at his previous pledge to give the GOP a "hip-hop makeover."

"You don't have to wear your pants cut down here or the big bling," he said.

Vermont and Iowa have legalized gay marriage in recent weeks, and a Quinnipiac University poll released in April found that 57 percent of people questioned support civil unions that provide marriage-like rights. Although 55 percent said they opposed gay marriage, the poll indicated a shift toward more acceptance.

The chief of the Republican National Committee has been criticized by some social conservatives in recent weeks after GQ magazine quoted him as saying he opposed gay marriage but wasn't going to "beat people upside the head about it."

Steele, a Catholic and former Maryland lieutenant governor, was elected chairman of the committee earlier this year.

Since we're getting a "hip-hop makeover" does this mean 50 cent is going to be nominated for Senate? (Although to be fair, Fitty does have a Republican ethos: Get Rich or Die Tryin'). Rush Limbaugh is going to be taken off the air and replaced by Soulja Boy? And we will no longer see the angelic face of Anne Coulter on FOX News, but instead Lil' Kim?

We need a real leader to pull our party back together to help stifle the damage being caused by SOVIET-HOMOSEXUAL-MUSLIM-HIPPIE-GHOST SHARK-MOTEL INDUSTRY-supported Barack HUSSEIN Obama bin Laden. Who we need now more than ever was the greatest president of all time: RICHARD MILHOUS NIXON. Tricky Dick needs to make a grand comeback and we can all help make it happen. But it's going to take money. LOTS OF $$$$$ MONEY $$$$$.

I hear you Brother, this is one case where the free market is just not going to work. There's no telling how many of just what kind to make, not to mention the excess inventory that might build up along with the liquidation costs. Then consider what to do with all the "butch" / "fem" stuff that they are all going to want. This could bankrupt an entire industry that Obama will no doubt want to bail out.

A new study PROVES IT. With so much of the money in the economy being wasted on gay weddings, which all goes to the Big Gay-Wedding Industrial-Complex, there is not enough money left to be spent in small businesses:

AMHERST, Mass.—A study says the over 12,000 same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts since 2004 have pumped over $111 million into the state's economy.

The report from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law says a typical same-sex couple spent about $7,400 on their wedding, with one in ten couples spending over $20,000.

A second study by the same group found that young, highly educated people in same-sex relationships were 2.5 times more likely to move to Massachusetts after 2004 than before gay marriage became legal.

M.V. Lee Badgett, a researcher at the University of Massachusetts and a study co-author, says allowing gay couples to marry has helped businesses in tough economic times.

Sunday marks the five-year anniversary of Massachusetts recording its first same-sex marriage licenses.

I am sad to say that I am disappointed in the GOP in waiting so long to drop this bombshell. Have we learned *nothing* in the past several years? Time and time again we have waited until just the last moment to trot out this argument, just before it is too late; now we will most likely lose the argument.

We didn't learn after we used this argument against slavery.
We didn't learn after we used this argument against giving blacks the right to vote.
We didn't learn after we used this argument against giving women the right to vote.
We didn't learn after we used this argument against giving equal pay for equal work.

When will the GOP learn? We need to use this argument from the very beginning. We've waited too long until it seems as though there are no other rational arguments to use, and I, for one, am sick of it! It is very simple economics! Having to pay for gays' health care will ruin our jobs, ruin our economy and herald the end of America. There is a reason that the Founding Republican Fathers didn't put gay health care in the Constitution: because it would shake the foundation that we are built upon.
