It is disgusting to see Democrats criticizing Christian Ted Cruz for being on vacation in Greece when a flood killed 100 or so people in his state of Texas. Ted and his preacher father are Christians of the first order. Ted no doubt was receiving updates in Greece and was praying for the safety of those still alive in Texas as well as for the souls of those who were drowned. He even talked by phone with Texas Governor and Christian Gregg Abbott. Praying there in Greece was a powerful act and the public should appreciate a public servant so devoted to the safety of his constituents.

Honestly, people are being so unfair about this. They act like Greece is just some vacation spot, ignoring how important it is for serious reflection and prayer.

I mean, think about it. Greece has thousands of years of history. Monasteries on cliffs. Quiet chapels by the sea. If you want to pray for Texans, why wouldn’t you choose a place like that? The acoustics alone probably carry prayers faster. He was surely visiting important spiritual sites, reading up on early Christian philosophy, and taking quiet moments to intercede for flood victims between checking in with the Governor.

Honestly, if more of our leaders took the time to visit Greece during crises, they might come back calmer, wiser, and more spiritually refreshed. That is the kind of devotion I want in a senator.

Nobody is saying the Greek Orthodox Church is getting a stamp of approval. Incense, chanting, sixteen-foot beards. Gross, hard pass.

It is just that if someone is going to skip town during a flood, Greece has the right aesthetic for dramatic, performative praying. Paul preached there. John sent letters there. Plenty of biblical ambiance to make it look spiritual while you’re checking in with the Governor over WhatsApp.

Why, it was the very same when a piddly, little winter storm went through Texas, and the Senator sought warmth and refuge in Mexico. In this day and age of interwebs connections everywhere (including backwards nations such as Mexico), Senator Cruz was doing all of his required Senatorial work from there. If he had stayed in Texas, then he may have been in danger from the storm, and then what good would he have been?
