Starbucks roasted over free hardcore porn wi-fi
STARBUCKS was blasted yesterday for allowing its customers to watch hardcore online porn on its free wi-fi service.
The coffee giant has a BT service that does not block or ban users — which could include children — from logging on to obscene websites.
Ministers yesterday voiced “alarm” at the revelations in a debate in the House of Lords and vowed to speak to the firm.
Baroness Massey of Darwen slammed Starbucks for its “disgraceful” failure to block porn despite being warned a year ago.
The Labour peer added: “Children are allowed and encouraged to come into Starbucks. It clearly needs to wake up and smell the coffee.”
Culture minister Viscount Younger of Leckie promised to take urgent action.
Rival Costa Coffee said it used wi-fi with filters that stopped customers accessing porn.
A Starbucks spokesman last night confirmed there are no restrictions on online filth in its shops. He added: “We have been working on a solution with BT which means customers get the right balance between the protection and the freedom they want and need online.”
BT said a solution would be in place by the end of the year.
