Members of the Ladies of Landover went to that new restaurant on King James Avenue, Grand Old Pies, to try it out and see if it was good enough for our husbands. From my blog...
A new restaurant opened up in Freehold, Grand Old Pies on King James Avenue. Being proud supporters of local businesses (it keeps the money in town, and you can be sure the owners are good, decent True Christians™), many of the Ladies of Landover decided to have lunch there today and test their fare, to see if it's good enough not just for us but more importantly for our husbands.
The service was great, I'll say that for them. The owner greeted us cheerfully, brought us to a table, then asked if we've heard the Good News about Jesus Christ. So far, so good. The menus had a decent selection of sandwiches, soups, and of course, a large selection of pies. Each menu also had different scriptures printed on them, a touch I really liked. Every other restaurant in town will put the same scripture on all of their menus to save on printing. The way they do it at Grand Old Pies means you'll never know what part of the Word of the Lord you'll be getting, resulting in a delightful surprise every time. Provided you go back.
The food was a shocking disappointment. I don't know if they just didn't pray hard enough, but none of it was particularly good. The sandwiches were dry, with nowhere enough mayonnaise, and they skimped a lot of the meat.
At least their pies would be good, right? After all, they are called Grand Old Pies. That's their speciality!
I had the apple pie. The crust was a soggy mess, and the filling was way too tart. Sister Bertha Jones tried the cherry pie, and had the same issues with the crust. Sister Gwen Higgins had herself a slice of pecan pie, and her crust was dry and she could barely taste the pecan.
How the restaurant could manage to make crusts either too soggy or too dry and not get even one just right is beyond me.
I do like to see local business thrive, especially ones with service as good as this establishment. I will pray for them to improve and ask that you join me. Hopefully with God's help, they will get better quickly enough to avoid going out of business.
