Well, Bengali cuisine is known more for its variety of fish. Every other cuisine is found around the country. I don't like samosas or fried food items much. I rarely eat in restaurants.

Of course, since I became a True Christian™ I avoid eating ethic food. I've been advised that it hottens up the blood.

You must have had mostly restaurant food. True home-made Indian cuisine is nowhere that hot or coloured. We do use plenty of spices but they are beneficial for health - for centuries. For example, turmeric is known to prevent allergies and arthritis.

I do follow Kali. And, I'm a Brahmin -that's as upper caste as it gets!

That was an interesting story. It does explain the basics of Karma well.

So, as a Brahmin, you believe that you have acted better than others in your past lives.

You also believe that people who are poor or suffering today are getting what they deserve. Infants in Haiti dying of cholera deserve it, because they did something bad in a "past life". A child born blind due to his mother's gonorrhea infection has it coming to him. A woman raped and mutilated by a pervert, left physically disfigured and emotionally scarred for life, did something to earn the attack. And someone born to a wealthy family is so fortunate because she deserves it.

Finally, you believe that someone in a lower caste, in order to move to a higher caste, must be a good little Untouchable and not make waves, but accept his or her station in life, scrubbing your toilets and cleaning up your vomit.

In other words, your caste system is designed to ensure that the Brahmins -- conveniently, those who control the priesthood -- are not rebelled against by the lower castes.

I wouldn't bother making comparisons with less fortunate beings. But, God has been kind to me in my present life. I learnt the distinction between Good and Evil at an early age. I'm quite content with my life as far as material wealth goes. I also treat other human beings (and animals) with kindness and compassion. There may have been a few transgressions here and there but so far, I've lived my life in an ideal way.

Yes, I do feel I have "earned" the good things in my present life. The laws of Karma are 100% accurate.

God did not give me the right or option to comment on another person's karmic status. I try to be nice and compassionate to the less fortunate beings within my social radius. However, to all those examples you provided, I don't have a solution to their misery. Life is unfair, so they should all probably try to suck it up. I wish them good luck in improving their lot.

Charity begins at home.

The caste system isn't as rigid as you think. There is a lot of fluidity and upward mobility within the caste system. India has plenty of affirmative action policies for historically backward castes. Today, you can find them everywhere from the seats of parliament to universities and doctor's clinics.

I personally have nothing against anyone wanting to improve their present circumstances through a good education and hard work.

In other words, your caste system is designed to ensure that the Brahmins -- conveniently, those who control the priesthood -- are not rebelled against by the lower castes.

Brahmins are still revered in this country but we aren't the richest. The merchant castes of India (of which, you'll find plenty in the United States) have all the wealth. Many Brahmins happen to be poor as well. But, no other caste has the grace, intellectual temperament and selflessness that you'll find in a Brahmin. That is why despite our lack of wealth, we get all the respect from other castes.

The caste system has all but collapsed. Although the upper castes have still retained some privileges, for the most part, the caste system is irrelevant today.

Modern India is not even a Hindu country. The government of India is a secular, atheist institution.
