Wow, way to be racist. Why do you heathens always have to resort to insults and racism to prove your points?

Just because someone is from Iran or some other weird country doesn't mean everything he does is wrong. Stop being such an ignorant racist and read your Bible!

I'm not sure which of the replies to my post I should reply to, but I find this one the most interesting. It's very amusing to be called a racist myself, when members of this forum have been extolling the virtues of things like racism and you yourself refer to Iran as a "weird country". I personally love the Iranian people, I have several Iranian friends and they're some of the most intelligent, friendly and warm people I know. The majority of the information that I have about Iran is from them. They tell of the fear that their people have of speaking out even in private against the regime and of the harsh punishments for even minor crimes. The oppression of women. The restriction of freedoms that people in the West enjoy, such as the freedom of speech and of opinion. The lack of tolerance for people of other faiths, for atheists, for homosexuals. Sound familiar?
If you also embrace all of those ideals, I don't get why you would see it as an insult to be compared to Iran...

They preach that everyone should be mooslim. We preach that everyone should be Christian. BIG difference! Iran says Israel should be wiped off the map. We say Iran should be wiped off the map.

3. Christians advocate stoning people as punishment

Woah there, friend. I've been agreeing with most of what you said and then I saw this. I have many female Muslim friends who wear the hijab, and they are NOT oppressed. That is a very stereotypical Western view, which assumes anything that is unlike their own culture is wrong.

In fact, Muslim women wear the headscarf for personal reasons, not because they are oppressed. In fact, many say that it is very liberating and empowering to do so.

Please think before you make such ignorant, throwaway comments!

You have it wrong:

1. God tells us to read the Bible
2. We read the Bible
3. We conclude that we must tell people to follow the Bible
3. The Bible says women must server their husbands (but NOT in a way that is oppressive)
4. We say "the Bible says that women.... etc"

Our view of the position of women should not be seen as one that is independent of the views repeatedly advocated by the Bible. We didn't make it up and we didn't write it down.

It's great that you've been agreeing with most of what I said, which makes it all the more important that I answer your comment and explain myself. You're absolutely right, and I realise that what I've said can easily be misunderstood. I also have many female Muslim friends, some of whom where the hijab, and some of whom don't. There are of course women who make the choice to wear it for religious reasons, which is absolutely fine, I would never criticise that. But in Iran at least (I'm aware that I'm focusing on one country a lot, but that's the one I know the most about) all women have to cover their heads when they're in public or they could get in a lot of trouble with the law. Iranian women that I know who don't make the choice to wear the hijab for religious reasons have a very negative opinion of the situation, which is what I had been trying to get accross - though perhaps in too much of a simplified way, as I was only using it as an example.

You have the same God anyway - "Allah" is just the Arabic word for "God". In fact it's even used by Christians with Arabic as their native language to refer to "their" (and "your") God.

Don't worry, I'm not saying Islam is great and Christianity is terrible. I have nothing against religion per se, it's just extremists of both religions who decide to interpret their holy book literally and advocate stoning that I find objectionable.
