Re: The Cane makes you Able
As an Australian at an English school you may imagine that I have heard many interesting comments, indeed I recall frequent episodes involving attendees at a (different) single sex school just around the corner. Our "games" days were the same day. We did cross country running. Unsupervised. [It probably wasn't intended to be unsupervised, but I guess staff members had other urgent matters at hand - they were also cross country enthusiasts, after all..]
English visitors to Australian schools will have similar fond memories.
Insufficient corporal pusishment in addition to being anti-Biblical leads to all sorts of careless habits, particularly noticeable in written language - I just glide over the sloppy bits and focus on the parts that really matter. The underutilisation of punishment resources in schools across the world has dealt the hand we play today and there is little opportunity for finesse. Sometimes it's better just to sit back and watch your partner mess up the dummy hand even though you know you'll wind up going down by three tricks and finish up departing via the window. I blame the education policies of successive communistic governments, progeny of SATAN: it would be churlish of me to blame the baronet.
