Hi,

I am here because I got htis nice PM by one of the moderators to introduce myself.

I am a chemistry student in Munich in southern Germany and while I wandered through the realms on the internet I came across some atheists on youtube like TJ Kirk and Jaclyn Glenn.

Even though I consider myself an agnostic leaning towards atheism, I was amazed with how much dedication they fought their point. Over here christians and non christians live together peacefully, nobody is calling each other a retarded dumbass for not believing the same stuff as others and my friends never tried to convert me to christianity.

I continued my search and found this site. Oh, boy, what fresh hell is this, I thought. People here are mean towards anybody of another religion, non white skin color, sick people, gay and lesbians, liberals, democrats, Obama-voters etc. I am still not sure if a lot of this stuff is actually mean in a satiric way.

Anyway, I am here because arguing with a fundamentalist could make an interesting intellectual challenge from time to time.

Actually that is not entirely wrong. I was born in the eastern part of Germany at a time when the country was still divided into FRG and GDR. So I grew up in the socialist block and there is no great tradition of teaching christianity to your children over here.

Sure it is. But if you don't get it from humans, you have to grow animals. And they consume grain. Take it however you want. Without fertilizers you would most likely die. Furthermore, if there was no petrochemical industry, you couldn't fuel your agricultural machines, you couldn't have such a high concrete output so that people are able to build there own homes, you would have no highways because guess what? You need bitumen for that and where do you get it from? Right, petrochemistry. Have you tried surviving without tools? Unless yours are made out of stone like the ones of our ancestors, they are most likely made of metal and covered with boron nitride (sic!) to make them harder and more durable. Guess where the metal comes from? You have to have some means to find some ore (analytical chemistry tells you wether there is some in this rock formation), you have to dissolve it (pure chemistry) or at least get the metal in it into solution, then separate the metal from any undesired stuff that is in there too and then you can reduce it, either using hydrogen (expensive), electrolysis (expensive) or coal (cheap, but not possible if the metal forms carbides). Then you can work it into material. Pure chemistry. Without it, you would be nothing. Not to mention that all the stuff that makes modern life so comfortable would be impossible without chemistry. Cars - made of metal, coating is pure chemistry. Fueled by petrochemical products. Plastics - found everywhere in nearly every product of modern life. Computers - you need highly pure silicon to make the chips - not possible without chemistry. Drugs for when you're sick - again, organic/biochemistry. Electricity - generated by burning fossiles. You Americans use oil for that (over here it is mostly coal, gas, nuclear power and renewable energies) - petrochemistry. Or nuclear power. You have to gain the uranium or plutonium and enrich it - without chemistry you wouldb e nowhere.

But my assumption is that if you would try to do without the achievements of chemistry, most of you would die a horrible death and without the amenities of modern technology, life would be much harder. If you want, you may look at it that way: the technology was made by humans, but who ispired them? Couldn't that well be the deed of a deity?
