It's never been something that's been widely discussed outside of the monastic world, and as far as I know, only some orders provide for these harsh punishments and acts of penance, but the Carmelite order is one of them.

I fear you may be right, Sister. As far as I know, the only nuns who are into such practices are involved with Opus Dei; but they go in for self-flagellation rather than beating other people. And usually with metal, rather than knotted ropes.

I just learnt the Pope in Rome has canonized two former popes out of recent history, and now I am to be whipped extra severely with a hard knotted flogger made of heavy ship's hemp by that vile Abbess, to celebrate this event for the church. Those popes may have claimed they were infallible but they sure didn't do anything much for me and other rebels!
