How do you know you're running in the same direction all the time? You'd use a compass, right? The compass needle points to the North Pole, so if you were running west, it would point to your right, and by keeping the North Pole on your right, you keep going west.

Now look at the picture below.



The North Pole is in the center. If you start ANYWHERE, and keep going with your right hand towards the center, going west, eventually YOU END UP AT THE SAME SPOT.
