It wasn't a republic as you see nowadays, the republic lasted from 1581 to 1795 and it consisted of Holland, Zealand, Utrecht and 4 others, (Drenthe was too poor). Holland was the most integral part, having the most harbors and thus the income/money. I don't know the precise cause as to why foreigners call the Netherlands nowadays Holland but I guess it's because the most important cities are situated in those two provinces, still you wouldn't care and instead rabble on with your mindless "Saviour this, Saviour that".
