You may have seen this on the internet (probably on facebook) recently:
The person who put it there, is a fluffy-bunny, NED christian.
Sure, it sounds cute, but the person who put it there, was basically saying, she just got out of a relationship with a douche, and that she's a "christian".
Let's look into the story of Ruth and Boaz.
(Almost all scripture will come from Ruth)
Elimelech and his wife Naomi and his two sons Mahlon and Chilion (Mahlon means "sick", Chilion means "weakling") left Bethlehem and went to Moab because there was a famine. Mahlon and Chilion married two Moabites, Ruth, and Orpah. All the guys died. Naomi decided to go back to Bethlehem, because there was break there, so she told Orpah and Ruth to go back to their parents. Ruth liked Naomi, so she stayed, Orpah left.
Naomi had a kinsman named Boaz. He was rich. Ruth went to go pick up the scraps from the field (Leviticus 23:22) then Boaz was like, "who's the hottie picking up the scraps" and his men said that's Naomi's daughter in law, her husband is dead. So, Boaz said, leave some extra for her. So the men did.
Now, Boaz was a rich man, he probably had a lot of girlfriends (Ruth 2:13 ... though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.) Ruth knew that. Boaz let her eat with the men, and told them not to touch her (Ruth 2:9).
Naomi then tells Ruth to go and sleep with (not have intercourse with) Boaz, after he gets drunk (Ruth 3:3). So she does. He wakes up around midnight, and is startled that there's a girl at his feet (he's probably wondering if he banged her). She says he didn't but, she'd like some blanket.
Boaz isn't young, so he says, she's a good person, because she didn't go after a young piece of ass (Ruth 3:10).
Boaz then realizes that he's not the nearest person related to Naomi, but he still wants Ruth (Ruth 3:12). So, he says he'll do his job and marry her, if the other guy doesn't want to. This is from Deuteronomy 25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
So, Boaz has basically proposed (a wee bit early) to Ruth. So, he has to wait to see if the nearer kinsman wants to marry her. So Boaz goes and waits for the guy to show up.
So, the guy shows up, and Boaz tells him that Naomi is going to sell her land, and that the kin get to buy it first, otherwise Boaz can buy it, and if Boaz doesn't want it, then anyone can buy it. So the guy says "ok, i'll buy it". (Ruth 4:4)
Then Boaz says, BUT if you buy it, you also have to marry Ruth, so that the name of Mahlon can live on. At which point, the unnamed kin says "he can't do it (Ruth 4:6). The kin was afraid of having the property that he bought go to someone who wasn't (but actually was) his son.
So, Boaz buys the land, and Ruth.
Then Ruth gets pregnant and has Obed, the father of Jesse, the father of David.
That's great... Now remember, that Boaz said that he was only marrying Ruth so that he would "raise up the name of the dead".
Ruth 4:21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
Boaz name is in the begat's, not Mahlon. The only mention of Mahlon in the bible, is in Ruth. Boaz is listed again in 1 Chronicles 2:12 as the father of Obed. Even though, according to the law, the father of Obed should be listed as Mahlon.
So, lets look again at the cute little story and some of the names in it.
Was Boaz a:
Brokeaz, no
Poaz, no
Lyingaz, well, he wasn't truthful to the kinsman
Cheatingaz, he had several handmaids
dumbaz, no
downlowaz, well, kinda
fakeaz, maybe a bit
cryingaz, no
punkaz, no
goodfornothingaz, no
lazyaz, no
Beatyoaz, no
badcreditaz, no
Basically, Boaz was a dirty old man, who cheated his kinsman (cousin probably) out of a hot young moabite girl, then lied about the offspring's lineage.
And this is the kind of guy you ladies are supposed to wait for?
Ladies, wait for the kinsman, he's the only person in this story who actually did the right thing.
