LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 - The largest Roman Catholic archdiocese in the United States said Friday it has agreed to pay $60 million to settle 45 lawsuits alleging sex abuse by priests.

The deal is the most significant step to date toward resolving extensive litigation against the archdiocese that has dragged on for years.

"I pray that the settlement of the initial group of cases will help the victims involved to move forward with their lives and to build a brighter future for themselves and their families," Cardinal Roger Mahony said in a news release.

Ray Boucher, the lead plaintiff's attorney, said the settlement involved 22 priests and was the largest settlement the Los Angeles archdiocese had reached "by far." He said more than $50 million would come from the archdiocese and about $8 million from religious orders.

"I wasn't certain we would ever get it done, but thankfully 45 very injured people will have a change to begin to heal, particularly at this time of the year," he said.

The Los Angeles archdiocese still faces more than 500 lawsuits from people who allege they were abused by about 200 priests and laypeople dating as far back as the 1930s.

The payout is the second-largest in California, behind the Diocese of Orange's 2004 agreement to spend $100 million to settle 90 abuse claims. It is also one of the fourth-largest in the U.S. since the clergy abuse crisis erupted in the Archdiocese of Boston in 2002, according to an Associated Press review.

Sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests has cost the U.S. church at least $1.5 billion since 1950. Several American dioceses have reached multimillion-dollar settlements with victims in the last few years, as bishops have tried to resolve the crisis and move on.

Four dioceses - Tucson, Arizona; Spokane, Washington; Portland, Oregon, and Davenport, Iowa - sought bankruptcy protection from a flood of lawsuits. Tucson has emerged from the process.

Settlement talks have been under way in the remaining California cases since 2002, when legislators passed a state law that suspended for one year the statute of limitations for sexual abuse claims.

Nearly 1,000 people filed claims against the Roman Catholic Church in California under that law.

Priest in trouble over sex tape

A Romanian priest is in trouble after his plan to discredit a local councillor by filming him having sex in church backfired.
Father Petrica Florea, 47, from Costesti, convinced a local 17-year-old girl to seduce Constantin Moise, 74, on the altar of a local church.
He filmed the sex session and then planned to show it to parishioners so he could discredit the councillor and take his job.
But his parishioners were so horrified they chased him out of the church and called police, Romanian daily 7 Plus reported.
A police spokesman said: "The priest wanted to make Moise resign because he wanted the position for himself.
"He wanted to discredit the councillor in front of other people. But all he managed to do was anger his parishioners."

He added Father Florea was facing a criminal investigation on charges of attempted blackmail with a possible jail sentence if found guilty and would likely be expelled from the Church.

'Virgin Mary' Seen In Texas Grocery Store Freezer

(CBS) MORTON, Texas We've seen the image of "Jesus" on toast. Even the "Virgin Mary" on a tree.

But folks in the small West Texas town of Morton say they've seen the "Holy Mother" made of ice inside a freezer at the local grocery store.

It started as one drip from the ceiling of a freezer at the Morton Thrifty Food grocery store. Now it has become quite the sanctuary for a lot of Catholic believers.

"I wanted to cry when I saw it," said Stephanie Santos, who was visiting the ice formation. "My mom has all saints in her house. But this one just got to me."

Store employee Alma Avalos first spotted the formation in the back freezer of her store, noticing what had been a few drops of water from the ceiling that had frozen.

"I went in there, and it started forming like some kind of ice, and then Friday I went in there, and it was shaped like that," Avalos said.

As more and more people heard about the "Virgin Mary," they started coming in droves to see her, and the grocery store moved her into a freezer in the frozen foods section.

Some have had their prayers answered after visiting the ice statue.

"I had a lump in my breast, and yesterday, when I went home, it disappeared. I don't have it no more," Santos said.

Yea, right. That "lump" was probably her forgotten 20th runt trying to get a suckle. I wonder what new ways these mary-worshipers will come up with the spit on Jesus next week? Stay tuned...

Sex Abuse Lawsuit Against Vatican

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, Jan. 11 - Sex abuse victims can pursue damages from the Vatican in a lawsuit alleging top church officials failed to report known or suspected cases of child abuse, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II allows three men to pursue negligence claims against the Vatican over allegations of sexual abuse by priests in the Archdiocese of Louisville.

The case is the first sexual abuse lawsuit to name the Vatican as sole defendant.

The men alleged that the Vatican knew or suspected some of its priests or bishops were child molesters, but failed to warn the public or local authorities about them because of a policy prohibiting it.

The lawsuit claims the Vatican was negligent for failing to notify law enforcement officials or the public.

William McMurry, the Louisville-based attorney for the three men, said the ruling opens the way to take depositions of Vatican officials and to get copies of church records and documents.

"It's historic," McMurry said. "Our whole purpose is to hold the Vatican accountable."

Vatican officials declined to comment on Heyburn's ruling.

Many lawsuits stemming from the U.S. church sex abuse crisis have named the pope, the Vatican and other high-ranking church officials, but they failed because the officials could never be served with the papers.

Of course they couldn't serve the papers. Those dress-wearing nazis were probably all hiding out down in that "vatican archive" tunnel that runs under the pope's boy-rape rooms and leads directly into hell. All of that should change now, with this Christian ruling from Kentucky.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man suspected of decapitating his 4-year-old daughter and leaving the body for her mother to find in their suburban home was arrested in Washington, D.C., early Saturday, authorities said.
Investigators have not found any history of domestic or mental health problems at the home, and still have no leads as to a possible motive in the killing, said Clayton police Lt. Jon Gerrell.
Amber Violette told police Friday evening she had found her daughter, Katlin, with her head severed from her body, police said.
An "edged weapon" believe to have been used in the killing was found in the house, though Gerrell declined to give more details.
"This is devastating for the whole community as a whole, and it's the most horrific thing I've seen in 13 years of police work," said Sgt. S.P. Lapsley. "That a father could do this to his child, I just can't believe it."
John Patrick Violette's vehicle was found at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and investigators learned he had taken a flight to Washington. Deputy U.S. marshals arrested the 37-year-old after police tracked his credit card to the hotel, Lapsley said.
Police said Violette, 37, would be held in Washington pending an extradition on a murder charge expected to be filed in Clayton, about 15 miles southeast of Raleigh. The U.S. Marshals Service said an extradition hearing is expected to be held Tuesday.
The mother is not a suspect in the investigation, and Lapsley said police don't expect to make any more arrests.
Police said John Violette quit his job at a home improvement store on Thursday, the News & Observer of Raleigh reported.
Lori McCreary, who lives across the street from the Violette home in Clayton, a suburb about 15 miles southeast of Raleigh, described the family as "very private, but normal."
"They went to church every Sunday. They just seemed like a very happy, normal couple," McCreary said. "This is just so very, very shocking — and devastating."

Catholic woman dies of water intoxication and stupidity

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.
Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."
It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.
A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.
John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.
"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.
Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.
"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."
Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.
After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.
"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

Assuming all of those are true, what kind of smear campaign is this against the good name of the Catholic Church? They were obviously acting on their own accord.

What are they teaching in history classes these days? Do they not tell you about the millions of people that have been killed in the name of the cathylick chruch?

The Department of Faith has obtained secret reports which prove, once and for all, that the Office of Pope, aka the Popery or the PopePourri is SATAN'S work in progress.

It seems as though whenever someone dies and is tossed into Hell they go through a selection process to see who writhes in agony forever in what part of Fire Lake. When an exceedingly evil person is found, he is sent back to the surface to re-inhabit his dead, stinking corpse which is dug up and shipped to Rome. The body is reanimated by SATAN and the hulk is appointed to the office of Pope through a vote of lesser demons (the Cardinals) after the previous undead corpse is stripped of it's demon.

Thus a pope can only be replaced by a worse sinner and all of them have the gray, pasty appearance of a ghoul....which is exactly what they are.

We at Landover Baptist have been warning of this deception for almost four hundred years and, finally, people are starting to pay attention. I hope this step forward marks the beginning of the end of the Catlick church and that SATAN'S evil plan is foiled.
