Do tell, where is the study showing that HFCS causes cancer? For that matter, can you find anything linking HFCS consumption to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, or any other human ill? I bet you can't!

Also, here (to tack onto B.I.G.'s comment) are sugar cane and sugar beets, in their "natural, untouched by humans" state:

No, it doesn't really pour out like that.

Natural sugar is either of these produce items, cut up and boiled to extract the sugar, then cooled.

Why is HFCS Bad for us?

Since HFCS’s widespread introduction in the 1980’s North American obesity rates have skyrocketed. Obesity has been linked to may heath issues including heart disease and many forms of cancer. When HFCS is ingested, it travels straight to the liver which turns the sugary liquid into fat, and unlike other carbohydrates HFCS does not cause the pancreas to produce insulin; which acts as a hunger quenching signal to the brain. So we get stuck in a vicious cycle, eating food that gets immediately stored as fat and never feeling full.

Because he thinks the white stuff in his sugar bowl is "natural and untouched by man." It's not.

Let me take that paragraph apart for you:

Since HFCS’s widespread introduction in the 1980’s North American obesity rates have skyrocketed.
Agreed. Correlation != causation.

Obesity has been linked to may heath issues including heart disease and many forms of cancer.
Agreed as well. But since correlation != causation, and there is no demonstration that the increase in obesity is caused by the introduction of HFCS, this isn't really relevant.

When HFCS is ingested, it travels straight to the liver which turns the sugary liquid into fat,
Carbohydrates cause the body to produce insulin. High insulin production causes the body to store fat. Carbohydrates are NOT EVER TURNED from carbohydrates into fat. That's as likely as turning lead into gold.

Carbohydrates are always -- ALWAYS -- metabolized into glucose. The rate at which they metabolize determines their "glycemic index", or the rate at which they cause blood sugar to rise (that is, the rate at which the glucose enters the bloodstream).

and unlike other carbohydrates HFCS does not cause the pancreas to produce insulin; which acts as a hunger quenching signal to the brain.
This is actually pretty close to true. The release of insulin causes a release of leptin, which is what signals fullness. Insulin itself does not.

So we get stuck in a vicious cycle, eating food that gets immediately stored as fat and never feeling full.
Not feeling full, yes. HFCS stored as fat, no.

Now, here's something else introduced in the 1980s: "Fat Free".

People started thinking about their cholesterol levels. Products left and right came out that had no fat. In order to make up for the loss of flavor and consistency by removing the fat, they added . . . yup . . . sugar. The cheapest and most shelf-stable form of sugar available? HFCS.

In most cases, the "improved, healthier" foods had just as many calories as regular versions; some had MORE. And people, thinking it was OK to eat because it was "fat free", chowed down.

Don't blame your oversized backside on HFCS. Blame shoveling junk food into your face without paying attention to what it is.

You said that HFCS isn't natural because it's processed. So he showed you pictures to show that all sugar is processed.

If you want to have a natural unprocessed sweetener, you'll have to use honey. That's it.

Oh, and there is no correlation between HFCS and disease, there is between too much simple carbohydrates and diabetes, or too many calories and obesity, but those issues have nothing to do with HFCS.
Clearing up the high fructose corn syrup myths appears to be the new rage. Last week USA Today took a crack at denouncing the high-fructose fearmongering. And yesterday CBS News thoroughly took to task the claim that high fructose corn…

He never said that sugar wasn't processed. He said you have to change the actual chemical composition of corn to make it HFCS, you have to change it CHEMICALLY, thus making it into a different substance. The sugar inside those plants is the exact same sugar in your bowl except its been PHYSICALLY changed. The sugar in those plants is the exact same thing as what you put on your corn flakes.

It's just corn syrup put through an enzyme. Do you know what enzymes are? Do you know you have lots of enzymes in your body?

Excuse me while I go change the chemistry of my steak by throwing it on the BBQ. I might even add an ENZYME (ohgaboohghaboogha) of tenderizer to it.

Just because we disagree with you, doesn't mean we don't know what we're talking about. It's been around since the 50's so I don't know why the freakout now. Other than people want to blame something other than their laziness for getting fat.

You are actually incorrect.

glycogen, protein carbohydrates and fats, food high in protein, carbohydrates, protein carbohydrates, protein and carbohydrates

"Your digestive system converts the carbohydrates in food into glucose, a form of sugar carried in the blood and transported to cells for energy. The glucose, in turn, is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Any glucose not used by the cells is converted into glycogen - another form of carbohydrate that is stored in the muscles and liver. However, the body's glycogen capacity is limited to about 350 grams; once this maximum has been reached, any excess glucose is quickly converted into fat."

"In the body, carbohydrate is metabolized mainly into glucose, a major source of immediate energy, which is delivered to body cells. Any extra carbohydrate is converted to glycogen (a source of glucose and reserve energy stored in the liver and muscle tissues of humans and animals), or fatty acids, which are later stored as body fat. Therefore, although fat calories are most easily converted to fat in the body, calories from carbohydrate, as well as from protein, will also be transformed into body fat if these calories are not expended."

High fructose corn syrup is like manna and it is not wise to question where manna comes from. God provides it pure and simple and you are to eat it and give Him thanks.

meh, these scientists like to put fancy names to every day things.

I mean I would hate to see the horrors these people could make baking a cake sound like, with all the glutens and bicarbonate of soda causing CO2 to react.

It's still just baking a cake.
