Briton jailed for four years in Dubai after customs find cannabis weighing less than a grain of sugar under his shoe

    09.02.08

Jailed: Keith Brown had a speck of cannabis on his shoe

A father-of-three who was found with a microscopic speck of cannabis stuck to the bottom of one of his shoes has been sentenced to four years in a Dubai prison.Keith Brown, a council youth development officer, was travelling through the United Arab Emirates on his way back to England when he was stopped as he walked through Dubai's main airport. A search by customs officials uncovered a speck of cannabis weighing just 0.003g - so small it would be invisible to the naked eye and weighing less than a grain of sugar - on the tread of one of his shoes.

Dubai International Airport is a major hub for the Middle East and thousands of Britons pass through it every year to holiday in the glamorous beach and shopping haven. But many of those tourists and business travellers are likely to be unaware of the strict zero-tolerance drugs policy in the UAE. One man has even been jailed for possession of three poppy seeds left over from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow Airport. Painkiller codeine is also banned.

If suspicious of a traveller, customs officials can use high-tech equipment to uncover even the slightest trace of drugs. Mr Brown was detained and arrested in September last year and has been held in a cell with three other men in the city prison ever since. This week the youth worker, who has two young children and a partner at home in Smethwick, West Midlands, was sentenced to four years in prison.

A 25-year-old Briton who was found with a similar speck in one pocket as he arrived on holiday has been awaiting sentence since November. Meanwhile a Big Brother TV executive has so far been held without charge for five days after being arrested for possessing the health supplement melatonin.

The authorities claim to have discovered 0.01g of hashish in his luggage. Last night Mr Brown's brother Lee said his case "defied belief. For that sort of amount common sense should prevail, from where it was found it was obviously something that had been crushed on the floor - it could have come from anywhere." Rastafarian Mr Brown had been returning from a short trip to Ethiopia, where one of his children lives and where he owns property. He was travelling with his partner Imani, who was also stopped and detained for more than a week. Normally he flew direct to and from the UK, but decided to stop off in Dubai. "He was incensed when he called me," said driving instructor Lee, 57. "It would be funny if the circumstances weren't so unpleasant.

"Bugs are crawling out of his mattress when he's sleeping. His family are frantic with worry and can't call him." Last night campaign group Fair Trials International advised visitors to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to "take extreme caution". Chief Executive Catherine Wolthuizen said: "We have seen a steep increase in such cases over the last 18 months. Customs authorities are using highly sensitive new equipment to conduct extremely thorough searches on travelers and if they find any amount - no matter how minute - it will be enough to attract a mandatory four-year prison sentence."
Mrs Wolthuizen added: "We even have reports of the imprisonment of a Swiss man for 'possession' of three poppy seeds on his clothing after he ate a bread roll at Heathrow.

Held: A campaign is underway to secure the release of Cat Le-Huy from a Dubai jail

"What many travellers may not realise is that they can be deemed to be in possession of such banned substances if they can be detected in their urine or bloodstream, or even in tiny, trace amounts on their person." Only two months after Mr Brown was stopped economics graduate Robert Dalton was detained in almost identical circumstances.

Mr Dalton, from Gravesend, on Kent was with two friends when he was stopped and asked to empty his pockets. Officials found 0.03g of cannabis in a small amount of fluff. He is currently on trial and if convicted, is likely receive a four-year prison sentence. Last night his brother Peter, 26, told how it took 24 hours to find out why he had been stopped. "As we understand, the amount of cannabis was barely visible to the human eye and was at the bottom of the pocket of an old pair of jeans. "He's not a drug user, but he goes clubbing and the speck was so small."

Last week Cat Le-Huy, a London-based German national, was arrested on arrival at the airport. Mr Le-Huy, 31, head of technology with Big Brother production company Endemol, was arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs after customs officers found melatonin, a health supplement used for jet lag available over the counter both in Dubai and in the US. Authorities also claim they discovered fragments in one of his bags which they believe to be hashish. Fair Trials International said the amount was 0.01g.
Dubai has taken a hard line stance against drugs, and there's a reason why they do that!! They want to protect their children from the evils of drug addiction. Drugs are dangerous, and you take risks just carrying them around.

Hi, zwynenburg, your conclusion is correct, but some of your reasoning is inaccurate. Remember when Jesus made wine out of water?
    John 4:45-47
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

People use heroin, too, and that comes from flowers. God made it, but that doesn't make it good to use it. I don't even let the doctor prescribe me Vicodan when I hurt myself.

By the way, marijuana use in USA ( expecially with teens ) with harsh marijuana laws is much higher than Holland, where kannabis use is allowed in coffee shops and in hotels.

This thread should have died long ago. With all the excellent True Christian™ evidence presented, how can there possibly be any doubt left as to Marijuana's danger to mind, body and spirit?

    God strikes another Marijuana user:

Lodi man severely burned while extracting oil from marijuana (4:20 p.m.)

    September 16, 2008

LODI – A 35-year-old man set himself ablaze, both externally and internally, while attempting to extrapolate oil form a marijuana plant in a Lodi apartment Monday night, Lodi police said. George Elhard, who has no known address, is in critical condition at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento after his body was set ablaze at 9 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of S. Washington St., Lodi Police reported.

Officer Dale Eubanks said Elhard put marijuana in a sock, and pushed it into a piece of PVC pipe. He then poured butane into the pipe and let it filter through the sock in order to extrapolate Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from the cannabis. THC is marijuana’s active chemical. The butane fumes were so heavy a nearby water heater ignited, Eubanks said. A flash fire quickly set Elhard ablaze. He also breathed in the butane’s fumes, allowing the flames to encompass his lungs.

“There are lots of ways to extrapolate the oil from marijuana. This happened in a contained space, and the butane fumes just filled the bathroom,” Eubanks said.
Eubanks said some marijuana users like to ingest THC in a liquid form. The oil can be poured on cigarettes or food and is more concentrated than if smoked, he said.
You kids still think marijuana is safe?

Cannabis is not THC. Cannabis is a plant, which contains THC.

If all you want is THC, you can get a LEGAL prescription for Maranol, a pill containing THC.

When smoked, cannabis will cause cancer. Smoking one joint is the equivalent to human lungs of smoking an entire pack of cigarettes. Marijuana burns at a much higher temperature and is not filtered, unlike cigarettes. So, it does much damage to the lungs and throat.

Heavy marijuana use shrinks brain parts: study

    Mon Jun 2, 2008
    1

    By Will Dunham
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Long-term heavy use of marijuana may cause two important brain structures to shrink, Australian researchers said on Monday. Brain scans showed the hippocampus and amygdala were smaller in men who were heavy marijuana users compared to nonusers, the researchers said. The men had smoked at least five marijuana cigarettes daily for on average 20 years. The hippocampus regulates memory and emotion, while the amygdala plays a critical role in fear and aggression. The study, published in the American Medical Association's journal Archives of General Psychiatry, also found the heavy cannabis users earned lower scores than the nonusers in a verbal learning task -- trying to recall a list of 15 words.

The marijuana users were more likely to exhibit mild signs of psychotic disorders, but not enough to be formally diagnosed with any such disorder, the researchers said. "These findings challenge the widespread perception of cannabis as having limited or no harmful effects on (the) brain and behavior," said Murat Yucel of ORYGEN Research Centre and the University of Melbourne, who led the study.

"Like with most things, some people will experience greater problems associated with cannabis use than others," Yucel said in an e-mail. "Our findings suggest that everyone is vulnerable to potential changes in the brain, some memory problems and psychiatric symptoms if they use heavily enough and for long enough." Among the 15 heavy marijuana users in the study, the hippocampus volume was 12 percent less and the amygdala volume was 7 percent less than in 16 men who were not marijuana users, the researchers said.

The researchers acknowledged that the study did not prove it was the marijuana and not some other factor that triggered these brain differences. But Yucel said the findings certainly suggested marijuana was the cause.

    "STONED" FOR 20 YEARS
While about half of the marijuana users reported experiencing some form of paranoia and social withdrawal, only one of the nonusers reported such symptoms, Yucel said. The heavy marijuana users, average age 40, said they had used other illicit drugs less than 10 times, the researchers said. A U.S. group supporting legal sales and regulation of marijuana took issue with the findings, particularly because they were based on men who were such heavy, long-term users.

Yucel said the researchers have begun new research on the effects of both short-term and long-term and moderate and heavy use of marijuana.
So, God's gift to humanity or His curse?

You can get positive test result of cannabis if you have used cannabis lets say yesterday. It does not effect your driving but you still get positive resutl. And cannabis does not make you more active and hyped and "wanna go and drive" gracy what alcohol does. And by the way. Check this clip from BBC show fifht gear. It is NOT procannabis and anticannabis. It is just a observation video. I recommend it

marihuna does indeed increase your heart-rate when you use cannabis. And cannabis does NOT cause mentall illness in excessive use. It CAN activate hidden psychosis in heavyuser but it does NOT cause psychosis.
And everything cannabis does to you, you can be certain that alcohol does to you times 10. And yeas it does have more chemicals more than topacca. But then again tobacco smokers smoke a pack a day or more and many budsmokers use cannabis for example once a month and only one or two joints....cannabis can also be eaten or vaporized so there goes the cancermyth.
And did you know that TCH decreases the cancergrowth in labrats? Scientifically proven fact.

Positives for the use was that I had fun with my girl watching movie. Should it be something mindbogling? The fact that it maybe didnt do anything amazing is actually the reason why it should NOT be illegal. We just had good laught with the movie. Should a saturdayafternoon be something mind exploding?

You can be first-time teenage alcohol drinker and you can die. Some idiots in their teenage angst take a bottle of vodka and there they go.

And WHAT gives you the right say that I am from Christ-hating country? What in the world in my writing earlier gave you that impression? If you got that impression from my writing, then you are delusional.

And by the way, marijuana is NOT illegal in whole USA. It is actually pretty stupid and rediculous that you can have 25tolife in some states because of MJ and in other state it is just a minor offence. And it is also ridiculous that you can use medical MJ by the LAW in some states and then again government agencies can come and arrest you and your dying ass because you are trying to relieve your pain with MJ. That is what I call stupidity.
Marijuana has been illegal in USA only under 100 yrs and before that it was widely used. But when blacks and mexicans were to be pinpointed somehow they used cannabis as the reason why mexican should be sent back to mexico from california ( by the way USA inveded california from mexico )....so my point is that there are more political reasons than medical reason why marijuana is illegal.

And did I already tell you the facts about marijuana use in USA. Your teenagers use and try cannabis more than teenagers in countries with less tight cannabis laws. How about that? The war on drugs is a joke. It has been and it continues to be. Hardcore drugs witch DO kill are easier to access and are cheaper and still stupid governments are spending money to this stupid "war" instead of better ways to deal with things.

All the usual justifications for not just illegality, but sin.
