Do you have to interpret the Bible literally to be saved?

Hope this isn't TOO off-subject, but this is a question I have wrestled with quite a bit lately, as many of my friends are non-literalists. I myself do take the Bible literally and my faith sometimes takes a beating whenever I question whether parts of the Bible actually happened or not. Another related question: can an evolutionist be a Christian? Here is another article that sheds some more light on the subject:

Allow me to quote to you one of the first Papal Letters, which happens to be found in the Bible:

2 Peter 3:8 (I used your KJV so you'd have to accept it):

"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

So it probably wasn't 6 days of 24 hours.
