Rumor: Is Ayatollah Khamenei dead, in a coma or only isolating himself?
Rumor has it that the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, is either dead or in a coma.
British newspaper "The Telegraph" published an article on its blog on Thursday saying Iran’s 70 years old supreme leader “is dead.”
An unnamed but suggests reliable source said that the Iranian Ayatollah “collapsed Thursday afternoon, at 2.15 pm local time.” The British Newspaper quoted the source saying, “Khamenei is in the hand of GOD.”
Rumor circulating that the grand Ayatollah has been poisoned, but the few insiders who know about the collapse believed that “it was of natural cause and was not was not 'externally induced'” (no poisoning).
British newspaper The Guardian’s correspondent in Iran said on Thursday, "Discussions about Khamenei's health problems are legion. He has prostate, lung and lymphatic cancer; he is an opium addict; he has a mouth full of false teeth since a bomb attack 28 years ago that also cost him the use of an arm; doctors have given him at most two years to live".
So far, there has not been any official reaction to these rumors, but "Tabnak," a popular website close to former Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Mohsen Rezai, dismissed them, describing them as a “fantasy.”
On this note, the Iranian Embassy in Beirut denied any knowledge of the issue.
If Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has really lapsed into a coma and is near death, a succession struggle is likely to ensue in Tehran.
