If we had children working in America picking crops, butchering chickens, clearing dishes, or mining coal for 10-12 hours a day, we'd have a nation that appreciated the value of a dollar, a respectful younger generation, and NO MORE PROBLEMS WITH MEX-CAN ILLEGALS SWARMING OVER THE BORDER LIKE HORDES OF FIRE ANTS!!

Oh boy there goes yet another southerner trying to start a war with the north. Child labor laws are a cruel way for the greedy to get more money. Plus children would break down after awhile... they cant handle the stress of work that we have.

See, there's one I just don't get.

Does someone go into these third-world countries and force their people to leave their farms and go to polluted, overcrowded cities with exposed sewers and rats and roaches, and work for 50 cents a day in unsafe working conditions? NO!

Therefore, all goods they produce are already fair trade. They agree to a wage, and even travel hundreds of miles to receive it!

Is that good enough? NO! LIEBRALS in the US and Godless Europe complain because goods don't cost enough to the end consumer! Prices, they say, should be higher so the factory slaves workers in those third-world countries can have a lifestyle on a par with the average middle-class consumer here!

What's the point of this? Redistribution of wealth. It's nothing but a Communist ploy!

I returned from a visit just two weeks ago. All is well. My factory in Indonesia is staffed with hundreds of children 8-11 years old who work in 12-hour shifts making Tiki torches for backyard patios out of the bones of humpback whales. My factory in the Phillipines makes toxic chemicals for a variety of non-essential industrial uses, but since there have been no children born in that village since 1987, it is staffed by Chinese prison labor.

You do have a point... If children were still apprenticed at age 4 to 6, they wouldn't have time to do drugs, shoot each other, or any other number ungodly things.

I believe that you are also correct about labor laws. These are an after effect of socialism. Labor unions, striking, and several other "protected" practices were in fact brought about with socialism.

I started reading Benjamin Franklin's autobiography today, and now I see why there weren't problems with kids in his day.

At 12, he was apprenticed (that is, indentured servitude) to a printer (who happened to be his brother), which meant he'd get his room and board and maybe some little spending money in return for work, from age 12 to 21! And HE was required to sign the indenture documents!

Ah, the days of child labor.

I agree. I wonder if a peice of legislation could be drafted in the spirit of this? The demoncrats love legislating everything. Perhaps something vague enough for even them would suffice?

Children should learn a trade. This waiting till they're 25+ is wasting valuable years. We need to learn their aptitudes early, and start training them to work. Those who have an aptitude towards crime could be trained as demoncratic senators. Those with an aptitude towards senseless slaughter could be labeled as mooselimbs and sent to the middle east, or at least put in the Marines.

Do i really HAVE to point out why that is wrong. First of all they have no other choice than to work. If they do not work they will die, and they do not have enough money to go other places. But if they do receive money then they will be able to have a higher standard of living and move to other countries and will be able to help the global economy instead of being pushed about by money hungry people.

I can't tell you how pleased I am that you brought this subject up, Brother Worthington. This is exactly what is missing today; discipline, character and hard work ethic. We witness the effects every day here at the Godly Forums. Just look at the trash that can't spell much less form complete thoughts and sentences, or where a paragraph starts and ends. The number of them that don't know how to behave and have to be placed on Moderation is astounding. Just try to get one of them to mow a yard or shovel a sidewalk. The all want to listen to their little I-Pods, "hang out" with their friends, and worry about where the next "rave" will be.

Benjamin Franklin was a good example. But there are plenty of others. Look up how old Alexander the Great was when he was conquering a good chunk of the known world. How about how old Mozart was when he composed his first symphony?

Now just look at what we are winding up with. That cherubic harlot Monica Lewinsky didn't even know how to launder her own dresses while servicing the President of the most powerful nation on earth. Our youth get out of college and demand $120,000 a year with an Audi Quattro hiring bonus and can't even write a memo. This is not to mention that you have to go to college today just to get a high school education. It's just too tiring to learn how to mine a ton of coal, let alone learn how to read the Bible. And I suppose their little "New Age" religion "Earth Goddesses" are going to keep them warm in the winter. They want everything delivered to them in sound bites, just like on TV. They have all the attention span of a ferret on a double espresso.

A change here is long overdue.

You keep getting infractions for spitting out witless one-line responses and/or vulgarity, not for disagreeing. There's no reason to delete this post, as it was polite, lacking vulgarity, and sensible, with a real question behind it.

To answer your question: The workers decide to leave their farms and go to the polluted cities to take low-wage jobs. We're not talking about commuting from the suburbs into the city, like you might do for an office job. We're talking about packing up their things, and moving several hundred miles, for these low-paying factory jobs. They do not have to work in the city, they can stay on their farms. They choose where to go, and they clearly don't bother to get good information before making those choices. They go from places where they have ample food, clean water, and clean air, to polluted ghettos with open sewers and rats for food. After finding that their North Mexican dream was a bunch of lies, many of them stake their hopes on another false dream, and cross the border illegally to become migrant laborers in the United States. They find things not much better for them here, since they can't speak the language and have no education.

In many places, like Mexico, they also choose to follow the Catholic church, which forbids contraception, so they have thousands of unwanted children. This is great if you're running a farm, because you have extra labor. If you're in a city, it just keeps you overpopulated and impoverished.

The only reason that American firms locate in those horrible places is for low labor costs. If the people in northern Mexico, or India, or China, were all earning union wages like their counterparts in the US used to, there'd be no reason for American companies to locate there, and no savings to the American consumer. Instead, companies would work harder to automate everything, and then provide jobs for nobody.
